Is there a symbol used that says "ASL spoken here"? I'd like to post something in my art fair booth to that effect if there is...

Maybe this means that I'm a cranky person -- but I think using the "I Luv U" sign to mean ASL is just too sacharrine sweet. What about using the sign for sign? Each hand forming the #1 sign, pointed towards each other?

Whichever way you decide to go, I do think posting a sign is a great idea. :)

How about just "Deaf-friendly" ?

Added: what about a graphic of four hands spelling out deaf and write out "friendly" after it?

So that's too close to "fuck"? YIKES!!!

I certainly do NOT want to use that one then. I will probably just print something up with words. I'm so glad I checked here first.

ROFL! That just made me laugh!

Mbrek, if you change your mind and want to give it another try -- here's a video clip of the word sign:

http://commtechlab.msu.edu/sites/aslweb/browser.htm

I can't get you a link directly to the video. Just click on 'S' and then 'sign'
(but not 'sign language' -- you'll get two words than).

And here's a pix of some (innocent :)) index fingers.

I think the one second from the right is about the right angle.

You would need to have the other hand shown pointing the other way to complete the sign. I took a quick look and I didn't see any clip art -- maybe you could draw it or get someone to draw it for you?

I am an artist, I did think of drawing the hands for "sign". But what would you rather see, hand symbols for sign, or an 8.5 x 11 piece of paper with the words "ASL spoken here"?

Both. Graphics are more eyecatching. You're an artist, so I'm sure I'm preaching to the choir when I say that. :)

Yet, not everyone will recognize what the sign for sign means. Perhaps not even some people fluent in sign, since the sign doesn't exist yet and most people won't expect to see it.

I think the most attractive sign would be something that is similar to the standard ASL interpretering sign (sign is on the right of the web page, and I think it's a standard icon, but I'm not sure), but with the sign for sign instead. And then underneath that, the text for "ASL Spoken Here."

ETA: After you create the sign, maybe you can sell copies to others. :)

For me...I need a picture of a foot in my mouth. LOL!

Nope, I don't think so. At a British art fair it may mean "interpreter", but at an American art fair it would mean "fuck." I don't think mbrek needs that kind of attention when s/he's trying to sell his/her art! :D

I think you did mbrek a favor. :)

OK, how's this for a first draft. Opinions, anyone?

I'm a she, btw. And no, I do NOT want to create the wrong impression. I'm trying to make connections, not... um... hook-ups. :aw:
