Hello. I'm a first year ASL student. I'm beginning the intermediate level in the Fall, and I'm very excited to learn more advanced conversational skills and phrases. I was wondering if there is a specific ASL idiom for "lose your mind" or if it would just be the same sign for crazy.

I'm also very interested in ASL slang. I know "2-5-8" is "very interesting" and I can say "What's up?" - but I don't think that would be considered slang. Anything that isn't typically found in the ASL dictionary, I would love to know about.

Thank you!

Berry -Not sure if you might have posted the wrong video - or if you were just posting an example of an idiom?

The one you posted of "Run out of" (an item) isn't - at least in Canada - something that you'd use for "lose your mind", which is a different concept.

Didn't mean to confuse anyone, sorry. Reba had it pretty close. I was simply showing how easy it is to fish the net, like youtube, and find idioms, slang, whatever you want. I do like these folks.

But yes, I can picture myself signing, "Mind all gone" like that, or just miming opening my skull, taking out my brain and throwing it away.

As for slang, it grows in its own garden, like weeds, and sometimes it travels. The slang in Chico may not be recognized in Sacramento.

Thanks for your help. :) I found a few ways to sign it through other internet sites and through my instructor. And as for the slang, I suppose I need to get out more in the deaf community. I get so nervous though... I feel like a second grader trying to effectively communicate with Stephen Hawking. There's this language barrier that I'm not quite advanced enough to break through. Mostly I just have trouble reading other people's signs. Well, practice makes perfect.

Thanks again!

I can't find this idiom phrase on the internet, maybe I didn't look hard enough. "all of a sudden"? Can't find it, anyone know?

POW! (HIT/STRIKE)

(The above gloss is supposed to be all caps but for some reason when I typed the caps they came out lowercase.)
