In your view, which is the very best ASL dictionary out there? I am looking for one (price is not object) that has tons of sign words...the most actually.

Thank yoou Calvin. But what I need is a book (portable) that I can take me. One that has almost all the signs known to the language. Can anyone help me find a really good one?

ahh a book.. hmm there is several of them but I don't know which one is the best book that you can take anywhere with you. I'm sure someone here that can help you on that which book they'd recommend :)

and btw your welcome ;)

Is this one a good one?

I have that book. It's good for looking up signs by the handshape, and finding out what the English equivalent is. It's also a good source for finding signs for ABC stories. :)

But it's not a sign "dictionary" if you want a book that lists the English words so you can find the sign.

In Canada - I like the Canadian Dictionary of ASL

for "General" I like the Random House Dictionary of ASL ... the big hardcover version though, not the softcover version

I've yet to find an ASL Dictionary that has Theological Signs in it (the old Religious Signs book is very outdated)

HTH

But as ASL book it's worthy?

Yes, it's worthy but it's not going to satisfy your needs for a full dictionary. It's a good book to have in addition to an ASL sign dictionary.

American sign language Dictionary. By Elaine Costello. The lady knows her stuff, she has a phd. The book has 4,500 different signs and tells you along with shows you by arrows how to sign them. Remember though, these kind of books are just vocab not grammar or anything else.

I own that one. I have worn it out- the pages are falling out. I need a new one. :giggle:

Thats good. Remember though, that book wont teach you Asl its just for reference. Never use that book as a substitute for what you learn in class!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well it isn't that good that my ASL dictionary is falling apart. You see I have notes written on the margins of the pages. :pissed:

I have ASL book on my shelf and I may sell that to you if you want it? PM if ya interested!

A what Anij??

Coil binding ... if you book is falling apart and you have notes in it ... you could get it coil bound ... or for that matter "rebound".

Of course you could always just by a new one and use the old one for reference ?

P.S Aquablue - you wouldn't even want to knooooow what my booklist so far is this year ... it's just insane !

Thank you Anij. I am looking into it now. I know that Kinko's provides the service. I have just sent them an electronic message.

Happy to help ...
If it's not able to be coil bound ... call up your local library and ask who they have re-bind/recover their books ... this can often be done at a fraction of the price of a new book as well ... just a thought
