Hello I am in Upstate NY (Saratoga Springs)

My Daughter (6) has asked me to get her lessons in ASL I have no idea where to start we are not deaf but I do know this would be a good opportunity for her to interact with the deaf community and make friends which I fully support and would be happy to do my self, actually id like to have a crack at BSL since im British.

any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

the school system down here in Alabama has a lady that goes to home schooled kids and teaches them sign langauge if they want to lear, try her school and see what they have to offer first. Her wanting to learn while she is young is very good. See if they have community programs that deaf or HoH teachers tech to the neighborhood for them to go to and find local deaf functions to go to as well so she can get used to seeing people sign in their own environments as well. but mostly try her school first and go from there. I know we have the Helen Keller school for the deaf and blind as well as a branch off of it for the community called E.H. Gentry. community school for the Deaf and Hard of hearing.

try looking in your phone book for deaf associations or clubs or resources. I am sure they would be able to refer you to a place to take classes at. And sometimes colleges and universities would offer sign class. Also if anywhere near Rochester NTID is definitely a place you would probably be able to pick up a ASL class.

I found this by googling "ASL classes for familes and New York" and this came up. I am not sure where it is but if this is not in your area, maybe this woman can direct you to other programs in your area. Good luck!
