NEW YORK - The Easter season unveiling of an anatomically correct chocolate sculpture of Jesus Christ, dubbed “My Sweet Lord” by its creator, has infuriated Catholics preparing to observe some of their holiest days of the year.

The 6-foot sculpture by Cosimo Cavallaro was to debut Monday evening, four days before Christians mark the crucifixion of Jesus Christ on Good Friday. The final day of the exhibit at the Lab Gallery inside Manhattan’s Roger Smith Hotel was planned for Easter Sunday.

“This is one of the worst assaults on Christian sensibilities ever,” said Bill Donohue, head of the Catholic League, a watchdog group. “It’s not just the ugliness of the portrayal, but the timing — to choose Holy Week is astounding.”

The gallery’s creative director, Matt Semler, said the Lab and the hotel were overrun with angry telephone calls and e-mails. The gallery was considering its options, he said.

“We’re obviously surprised by the overwhelming response and offense people have taken,” said Semler, adding that the Holy Week timing was a coincidence.

The artwork was created from more than 200 pounds of milk chocolate, and it features Christ with his arms outstretched. The Cavallaro creation does not include a loincloth.

A publicist for the gallery said the artist was not available for comment.

Cavallaro, who was raised in Canada and Italy, is best known for his quirky work with food as art: Past efforts include repainting a Manhattan hotel room in melted mozzarella, spraying 5 tons of pepper jack cheese on a Wyoming home and festooning a four-poster bed with 312 pounds of processed ham.

This gives the whole new meaning of eating the body of Jesus Christ. lol

Can you imagine the reaction if it was a chocolate naked Mohammed?

I saw the chocolate Jesus on news at work last week but didn't know whats the heck its about--no closed captions on that very old tv.

Maybe that Jesus is naked pissed the Catholics off. I think the makers forgot to add the loin cloth to cover the privates.:ugh3:

Uhm... that statue of chocolate is fucking creepy ok? It's still art however and i don't see it as offensive. I think religious fanatics like to blow things out of portion. First harry potter books, now chocolate jesus. Nobody's gonna like me for this comment, but christians who act so rashly can easily be put on par akin to nazi-ism.

edit; (Bad joke) perhaps they would have been less offended if it was vanilla!

Indeed , they dont like the idea that Jesus is being portrayed as "black" or "dark" whatever. They want keep the image of Jesus to be all blue eyes and blonde hair american. :ugh3:

"They" who? Did you take a poll? I'm a Christian and I've never visualized Jesus as a blue-eyed blond American, even before I was saved.

There are millions of posters/pictures of Jesus being white blonde hair/blue eyes. We have this discussion before so Im not going to rehash this again.

I m just sayin' would this situation be differently if the art of Jesus was created by using vanilla instead of choc ?

Do you remember what happened when a newspaper published a cartoon picture that included Mohammad? Do you remember the riots and death threats?

Yea I remember that clearly. That s religious fanatics for you.

I wasn't being serious. I think what offends them mostly is the lack of a lioncloth as per stating in alot of the news articles. Although it is fearsome that people feel it's an attack on christianity. This is the sort of crap wars start over.

If those who claimed it was an attack were sane of mind they would have just asked him to please make the image more dignified instead of crying wolf. Doesn't that seem so much nicer? As for it being chocolate? There has been many chocolate jesus' made before in all sorts of shapes and sizes gave out by churches, sold at rummages and flea markets -- so I doubt that's the issue, unless people are thinking he's trying to make a political statement.

Let's face it, there's so many mixed feelings people have about it. In the end it shouldn't matter -- people are entitled their own opinions as he is entitled freedom to make art as he pleases.

Just a question, would anyone happen to know if Jesus was nude or wore undergarment during the crucifixion?

In general, people were crucified in the nude. Is there any way to know if Jesus was in fact naked or not?

I came to that conclusion myself as well but decided it was sort of irrelevant as seeing people already adapted the image of him having a lioncloth and exluded the point from my post.

Most likely He was. That was the common way of crucifixion, as you stated, and the soldiers took His robe.

Yeah, crucifixion was in the nude. But as for Jesus, you couldn't descrbed Him, it's beyond imaginable. Like catholic uses the crucifixion isn't the same as the real one. Like Passion of Christ, what you see in the movie, as for real life its far worse than what you see in the movie. It's horrific scene and the mockery at Christ.

Oh well...there will always be some groups who have to stir up the pot about little things. I call that "sweating over the small stuff" :ugh3:
