no point in having map when you have a GPS lol. and yes i'm pretty damn good with maps. All I need is a compass as well. I mostly use GPS for local roads. for highways - just compass and my wit. GPS is sometimes whacked on that and I don't want to pay more for traffic reports. :cool2:

I'm also quite good at reading (Braille/tactile) maps. However, now that I have GPS for my BrailleNote (a PDA for the blind), I rarely depend on them.

fascinating... :cool2: I just googled BrailleNote GPS and it looks like an interesting device. For those curious of what it looks like - see below

I love maps! One of my hobbies. And I have navigated since childhood when I was driving with my father.

Jiro,

Yes, the BrailleNote GPS is awesome. :) It can give me street names, directions (north, south, east, west or left/right), speed limit of the vehicle I'm traveling in as well as the names and addresses of businesses or residences that are in my immediate vacinity. I can also input the name of any city in the United States and it will allow me to "look around" to find out what is there. In addition, I can specify a particular destination and the BrailleNote will tell me how to reach it. Before I received my CIs, I used the BrailleNote GPS to travel on the bus independently. Thanks to my BrailleNote, I didn't have to worry about being unable to hear the bus driver call out my stop because I could sit back, relax and read the Braille display. :)

I'm very good with maps. Whenever I travel, I always look up online for directions before heading out. I've never had a need for GPS.

If I were to leave the path for gas or food, I wouldn't have any problem getting back because I simply memorize the directions I went. :)

I can also memorize directions extremely well (it's just a matter of reversing your direction of travel). Even though I'm able to do this, I still find GPS to be helpful -- especially in unfamiliar areas.

Me too! I started learn map when I was 7 years old. My grandma got me a Kid Road Maps book when I was on road trip to Kentucky for vacation. I started to love US and World Maps! LoL

That's very interesting. I never hear of it. I am glad that you have brailleNote for map. :)

I love maps, too. I love to find backcountry road to travel on especially with wheel drive. I perfer Atlas and Gazetteer over regular maps.

I'm very good with navigating the map and the routes from point A to B. :)

I use sun or stars to navigate!

I am serious about this.

I know I am good at maps, but be aware there are several locations where the road construction crew really messed up! My wife was very impressed when we are semi-lost I actually did this on purpose because I know I can find way back. When I want to go East on this highway, I looked at map, it shows east on other side and west on opposite side. BUT the road sign shows opposite. My wife did argue with me. I said how can the road toward east with sunset going down there? I would understand if SUNRISE, but sunset? So I ignored the sign and gone what I believe is correct. In the end I was right. My wife gulped.

I'm pretty good at navigating. I've got an excellent memory for maps and stuff.

Like Vampy, I usually study the map before going somewhere new, and then I get there with no problems.

I use my GPS on my iPhone if I go somewhere new at a short notice.

Yes, this is true and is something I learned in my O&M (orientation and mobility) lessons. In my case, I learned how to tell which direction I was facing according to the way the sun felt on my face.

One can also determine direction by the wind.

I'm very good with navigate on map, it's not hard as expected, there's information signs on highway that would tell you to get anywhere.
