The only other possibility is that the system server crashed hence not being able to allow users to know exactly what's going on. There's another online site I go to and that site has been having server issues lately and will cease to function once it can't handle the load thus causing it to shut down.
Although, if it is indeed a server upgrade, etc., then yes, we should at least be given some prior notice.
Until it's back up, 'bad hair days rulez'!
