Any deaf chef here?

Hi, everybody. I'm wondering if there is any deaf chef here in alldeaf and I would like to know what you have experiences. We can share stories about what we work at restaurant or other. I currently work at Rosie's Cafe at Boeing Company in Renton, WA as Grill chef. Anyone mind to share a story?
 
I do....but not chef. I'm just cooker at the restaurant. It can be hard to listen to the people in the kitchen room such as telling you to get or cut or cook some kind of foods.
 
My ex boyfriend but still good term friend with him.. He is chef at VIP Stadium.. He taught me lots! :)
 
My close friend Don is hard of hearing and is an executive Chef at country club not far from where I live, but isn't a member of AD. He had been chef for many, many years.

Hi, my name is Marcus.I'm a professional chef for more than 12yrs. I'm born from Jamaica. I moved in California since 1992. I learned alot different new things around the hotels & restaurants business here in Southern California. I'm currently working at the Hyatt Regency and Doubletree. It's a beautiful place I've enjoyed here. I love to cook, help and teach deaf people in my Orange County. Wonder how come you became a chef ? It's because I know how hard for those young deaf people who wants to become a chef but executive chefs are afraid to hire! That's why I need your supportive to enable us the expression of your words and I would be more than happy to write and inform all my deaf friends who works or want to be a chef. Thanks!

Yeah, I know how hard for you to listen or understand what chefs or waitress tell you to do it. I am a professional chef for more than 12yrs and have alot experience in my own challenge with those hearing chefs without an interpreter. I find a way is to ask, read their lips, write, show body language and teach. It helps me understanding every words how they tell or act whenever we were in a running kitchen. All you have to do is try your best and teach your employee chefs, steward or managers.Remember, those people didnt have the skills of their knowledge in your deaf world. Once they were taught by you, u would feel happy when they sign or communicate with you while you are cooking in the kitchen. Responsibility is yours, not them! It's because of most hearing people are too lazy to learn but i know it is not fair. I agreed with you 100%. Their responsiblity is to speak, listen and write!!
Believe me it would make your job easier than you think. Don't give up , prove them that Deaf can do it!!

When I read your quote, It caught my eyes and would like to ask u about how he could be able to listen, speak and understand with others ? I'm very proud of him, i couldnt image how he handle his responsiblity and job. In many years, Don works as executive chef at the hotel and wonder did he hire more deaf people to work in their kitchen department ?

In the past he had hired some deaf people to work in the kitchen to wash dishes or be busboy. Don's supervisor views Don as very valuable employee. He grew up going to school with me.
 
Maybe someone should start a Deaf cooking show to compete with Rachel Ray!

As I understand that Don has a valuable employee in his kitchen department. I know he understands, supports and respect for everyone but those deaf people who were hired they should be thankful to have him working with. I hope deaf people have to accept, be patience, copperative and help everyone working as team. Don is hardworking and trying his best to help whatever they need. You are lucky to have him going to school with you.
 
I agree with you. He went to school with me growing up long time ago. I didn't mean he still is going to school with me now. We are in our 40's now..smile Don has been working hard and long hours. He told me that it is very hard job, but he loves it. Sometimes he cook at my house when I had parties and I learn from him. I found that cumin spice is really good in chili! mmm
 
I used to know a deaf professional chef that lives in Boston. He wa one of the chefs at The Hyatt. I dont believe he is an AD member. Last I heard he won a couple of local awards for his recipes and got moved to one of the top chef positions at his work.
 
there are few deaf chefs in California.. one of them were retired.. He was best chef..I was invited to his place.. He cooked wonderful delicious foods.. Yummy...
 
I used to be a chef working at restaurant for 11 yrs till an injury force me to stop working so i havent worked in any restaurant since 2000. I miss working in big kitchen.. sigh but dont think I will ever do that again due to my right hand... :(
 
Does anyone remember deaf chatter Red Lobby...she used to work as chef. Anyone know where she is now and if she still works as chef?
 
Well, I don't know exactly where she is now but I will ask my friends who might know where she is. Keep you as informed as I could, thanks for asking!

Tell me what happened with your right handwraist, do you mind? Hope it wasn't burned from inside the fryer or grinder.Let me tell you a terrible story and hope it wont make your mind as dwell as forever. I promise that it wont happen to you again includes others, too!

In the last 10 years, one of my oldest friends who worked as chef with me at the hotel and he worked for 8 years. He is very nice person and friendly. Unfortunately, the most saddest thing I ever seen in my life. It was hard for me to forget what happened to my friend, u know. Image if he was my son or brother, I would cry for hours and hours..he is my friend who always helped me through a tough job here for many years. Anyway, what happened was that I saw before he put his right hand inside a big metal of Doug Mixer which is 375 volts- 5hp motor 4 speeds. His job is to make alot of mashed potatoes, heavy cream, butter, salt, garlic and white pepper.He had done it many times but one day it happened so fast He didn't realize when it spinned his right hand through the mixer when he put some butter into it. That was how it happened. I can't even explain how horrible thing you wouldn't want to see.

One day u might never know when it could happen to you, that is why the job is very serious and dangerous in your position or area. Be sure to watch before you do something.

The Equipment Kitchen like Food Processor, Grinder, fry cutter, Meat Chopper ,Slicier, mixers,machine and oven. As most of us as chef or cook should know how to be careful because these are too powerful it is dangerous to put yourself in a high risk of job. Please watch yourself or others if you could.

Not that I know of , a fewer the deaf chefs work in Southern or Northern California I hardly find.I wish I could meet deaf people who become a chef because I want to learn the share of their different experience job and that helps me understanding and changing something for a better place in the world to show " DEAF CAN DO IT ". Let me know if you find some of them, I would be more than happy to hear their many stories, answers and questions.

I'm Chef/prepare foods working at Swiss Chalet but still same repeat foods meals...
Still condiser seek another restaurant and more talent skills better way but have not made my decision about this later.. Least I still happy working Swiss Chalet Restaurant. Or probably I might go Chef School and get better promotion better salary. Wait and see... Troubling thinking about my own way plan ahead of time. *Flip the coin*
