Not quite. Even at 0.1 c, it would still take 43 years to reach the nearest star (other than the Sun), 700,000 years just to get from one end of our galaxy to the other (tip: don't get on any spaceship named "Voyager"), and millions of years for intergalactic travel. Traveling to another galaxy is probably impossible, unless wormholes actually exist, and those are still purely theoretical. Really interesting article, though. I bookmarked it.
 
Interesting! I'm sure that NASA would try that on spaceship to moon first then to Mars. :lol:

I sure hope that'll be a new energy source for producing power one day with cheap energy.

There could be planets that support life that are orbiting our nearest star. If so, the 43 year trip is certainly possible, especially as human lifespans rapidly increase. Send 25 year old astronauts and they will be 68 by the time they arrive. Of course they may not live long enough for the return trip(they would be 111+ years old) so it's going to be a lifelong trip for them. Of course the females can procreate during the trip.

It may be possible someday to cryogenically vitualize(non-freezing solid state) someone and reanimate after 500+ years. This will allow a 50 lightyear distance. Of course it will still take 50 years each way to transmit information at light speed(unless they find a way for FTL communication) but this will still allow humans to spread out and colonise other planets.

No one knows if FTL travel or even communication will ever be possible. Even if not, humans can still travel to the nearest stars and planets, populate those planets then travel yet again to the next nearest stars and planets. Just like plants slowly spread over generations to nearby land(they produce seeds that fall a small distance away), humans will do the same. After millions of years, humans can populate the entire galaxy and millions more years to populate neighbooring galaxies! :D
 
Oh, this science business in the space travel can be a headache, and very risky at that. I am so glad that I am here on Earth where I can breathe fresh air. I am right here where I belong. No, I would not want to travel in a risky space travel. Funny, I love Science Fiction movies and T.V. episodes like Star Trek. This science fiction is only fanatasy and make believe, but making into reality is kind of hard to believe that the space travel can be possible. I would rather stay here than go to another planet that we don't know nothing about. It is a lot safer even if we have wars and crimes here on our planet. We need to work on our problem here. Beside, don't you think it is costing a lot of money like million or billion of dollars to go into space travel? :scratch:
 
Another issue with space travel is that everyone on planet Earth would age MUCH faster than the people in the spaceship.

Imagine if the spaceship returned to Earth years later only to find a nuclear apocalypse.

You mean people on the space ship would age much slower?

If a spaceship made people on Earth age, the same would apply to every other object in space. :Ohno:

I believe that the closer we travel to speed of light we age slower- reach the speed of light and aging stops.

In that case, all your friends, family and everything you knew would be long gone, dead and turned into dust.

The world will be completely different by the time you return to Earth.

If that is, if humanity hasn't blown each other straight to hell by the time you got back.

This reminds me of an anime I saw years ago... Gunbuster.

It's about a group of high school girls who are trained to operate mechas to fight in war in space. What made this war unique was that it took place at the speed of light.

So, the whole time these girls were out in space fighting for their planet... they were aging slower than everyone else.

Look like one of my long-time unanswered question have been answered.

This is what I am wondering why we have wars on Earth right here? Are we always disagreeing over something that want to destroy our humanity and not to kill each other for death? I also don't understand why we can not accept us being different and care about our humanity. We are the way we always been that way no matter what culture and tradition we live in. Going on a space travel is not going to solve anything. We will still have wars every time we don't agree on trying to getting along with each other. This is getting out of hand in other countries and we may be next which I don't like it at all. That bother me a lot and my husband is worry that we might be next in Canada. :scratch: Sorry to go off topic. :shock:

I was thinking the same thing, but the wars does not solve anything neither. I'd rather to focus on this stuff over paying the taxes to fight against other countries.

It bothers me too..

*Edit* I am going to create a thread about this at the on-topic debate, it sounds very important for us to discuss.
