An idea for a CI alarm clock

Hi everyone.

I don't yet have a CI. I'm in the process of getting one right now. Just had my MRI last Friday. Have another appointment on the 11th of August with my Audi. Then I'll find out when I'll have the surgery. Probably sometime in September.

Anyway, of course I've been doing a lot of research on it. I still have to pic my brand. I'm debating between AB and Freedom. But while I was researching an idea hit me. So I thought I'd come here and share it.

Obviously you don't wear the CI while you're sleeping because it'll fall off and not very comfortable anyway. So I'd still have to use an alternative for an alarm clock (Mine vibrates under my pillow).

Here's what I'm thinking. What if there was something inside my pillow that's something like the sound processor and sends the sound to my implant? It seems like this would be possible.

What do you think?

Well Ron, then you'd be competing with this:

[ame=http://www.amazon.com/Sonic-Alert-SBT425ss-Vibrating-Telephone/dp/B000EX5HXS/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=hpc&qid=1249281768&sr=8-3]Amazon.com: Sonic Alert SBT425ss Sonic Boom Loud Vibrating Alarm Clock with Telephone Signaler: Health & Personal Care[/ame]

I use one as an alarm clock (no standard alarm would wake me up because of the severity of my HL) and it works really well for me.

That's pretty much what I use now. Different brand but the same vibrating part.

Just thought I'd bring the idea up. My idea actually uses sound.

You might consider this...

I use a "flashing" alarm hooked into my bed lamp. This system served me well in my HA days as it still does now with my CI.

I know what you mean by this new idea, I would utilize it also. But here's the problem, it would have to be a whole separate processor to begin with. Like the BTE, it will probably cost 8 grand or so. Also, the signal sent wiill have to be pretty strong to connect with the implant in the head, not sure if the rf energy required to do this would be at a safe level. Though, yeah, despite these concerns, it's a great idea!

Good points.

I wonder if there is a "less expensive" way of providing the right kind of "sound". I mean it doesn't have to be as good or advanced as the sound processor in the CI. Just has to produce a "buzz". I'm thinking that because it doesn't have to pick up real sound and turn it into the right kind of digital information that it might not cost as much to produce that. But then again, I don't know much about that sort of thing.

I'll look into it.

I just read something in another discussion about how some things can cause the CI to make a buzzing sound when in T-coil setting. Maybe there's something there for this idea.

Not really as it is not very loud. Worst yet, it is not a noise that grabs your attention either. It would have to be awfully loud for you to start paying attention to it while sleeping.:zzz: :D

Apart from that, you would need to generate a significant magnetic field in your bedroom to cause a luod enough buzz, not a wonderful idea, imho...

To hear the buzzing with the T-coil setting, you would have to wear your CI while sleeping. If you did that, you could leave the CI on microphone and use a regular alarm clock.

I don't sleep with my CIs on and my vibrating alarm clock works great. If I fall asleep with it in place, the noise normally bothers me enough that I don't sleep very well. I place the vibrator device between my box springs and mattress. I tried it under my pillow and it was to intense. As long as it doesn't touch the head board, my wife rarely hears it which is good since I get up about an hour before she does. I accidently let it touch the head board the 1st night I used it, moved it down about 6 inches and have never had to move it back.

Some people add a flashing light to the alarm clock but for me the vibration is enough. I also make sure the audible alarm is turned off since I can't hear it anyway.

Good luck in your search.

I have my own sonic alarm. I'm still use it when I was sleep without CI on. It doesn't bother me. I have no idea about set the alert for CI on. Your ears need to be rest and comfort on the pillow.
