Amish Children Find Infant's Body in Trash

STRASBURG, Pa. (Dec. 31) - Amish children who were getting ready to burn their school's trash found the body of a newborn girl Wednesday, authorities said.

The body was found in a bag in the burn barrel of an Amish school in Strasburg Township, about 60 miles west of Philadelphia. The bag had been placed in the barrel sometime between Dec. 24 and Monday, but no one looked in the bag until Wednesday, said Pennsylvania State Police Trooper Douglas Burig.

"We are appealing to the public for anyone to call us with information about anyone who recently gave birth or should have given birth and does not have a child with them," Burig said.

The cause of death was not immediately determined; Burig said an autopsy was scheduled for Friday.

I'll be dayumed! Thats totally disgusting what happened! hope someone turns up the rightful mother and or admits she did this ( the birth mom) Isn't there a dont ask drop off in PA??? that similarity in MD and CA??? i was wondering abt it.

Wounder if the mother is an unwed Amish teen ? Woud the elders shun her for give birth ?

That's exactly what I was thinking. It was probably an unwed amish teen gal!

That is a Horriable thing that happened! I cant stand people who kill their babies and put them in trash bags geesh..

Who said the baby was killed/murdered?

The article specifically stated this,

We don't know what really happened to the baby. The baby could already had been dead by the time it was born.

Cheri -- Banjo is indeed accurate -- the cause of death has not yet been determined but this DOES seem to be a VERY suspecious circumstances due to the discovery of the baby in a trash pile which should NOT have happened in the first place -- child couldve been simply sent to the hospital and left there and the mom wouldnt have to worry abt the risk of being charged with child endangerment/abandonment (should the child have survived) and/or homicide (should the child have not survived) --

Javapride -- yes in my native hometown there is a law that says if a birth mom is unable to care for the child they are allowed to leave the child at: hospital, church or fire house/station and not be at risk for prosecution on child endangerment/abandonment

Banjo, the baby was in the trash bag what do u call it? oh it just died and put in the trash bag? if the baby just died itself then someone would have called and report it but throw away with the baby in the trash bag sounds like murder to me.

The fact that the baby was discarded in a trash bag still doesn’t demonstrate homicide. It is possible that the baby was stillborn outside of a hospital setting and the mother didn’t want to deal with the authorities. If it was an Amish girl, this could be explained by the fact that Amish don’t have telephones and are usually suspicious of outsiders—particularly authority figures. In all probability though, this was a homicide. The most likely scenario is that the mother carried the baby to full term, and then killed it to avoid an unwanted responsibility. We’ll know the truth within a few days, after the autopsy is performed and the criminal investigation is conducted.

Hmm if the Amish community has no telephone how did the Amish teacher contact the police? On buggy?

There are two kinds of amish communities. One kind is what we all know of. The other kind is the kind that bends the rules and have very little electricity to get them by. However, those kind are usually the least noticed people around. As for phone, the person probably went to a nearest payphone that was nearby the area and made the call. Remember, amish communities are tourist attractions. There could be possibilities of pay phones nearby of you want to attract more tourists.

Or there was a cell phone in the trash! I dunno. I never look into other people's trash. :ugh:

But it doesn't serve right to throw it out.. it should be handed over to the authories dead or alive.

Whether the baby found in a trash bag in a barrel is really uncalled for...and there's yet any information on whether it was killed/murdered...it's really really a sad thing that this 'child' ended up where it was found regardless what did take place!! Whether if it was a newborn of an unwed amish girl...or an outsider with a mind to discard in a 'burn' barrel...it's likely that whoever had done this was timid and scared if anyone knew she had a child...but who knows...until the 'mother' of this child is found and questioned for this.
