Today, Congress holds hearings on the first American Internet censorship system.
This bill can pass. If it does the Internet and free speech will never be the same.

The ramifications of this would be off the scale.

I saw this too, when some sites put attention to this by putting "censored" stuff all over the content.

I read about the people who signed and are advocating the whole thing. They're all the big conglomerates. Nintendo, Sony, Movie Franchises, etc. This whole schmuck is a lot like the way China intends to control their population: filtering what they can see.

I'm glad to see that a lot of big advocates are teaming up against it and giving a good defense. Google, Yahoo, Youtube, are all in this together.

The fact that this is happening and people don't seem to be in an uproar over it is quite worrisome. People do not realize that this type of law will lead to more severe laws being created over the years.

This is going to be the gateway to more laws people will not want, and this type of law is not going to put a dent in piracy anyway. People always find a way, no matter what.

Exactly, they were saying it's just a DNS block so you could just enter the IP to circumvent it.

I imagine the biggest thing with why only some are paying attention is because of either ignorance in what they are currently surfing the internet on.

I saw that Anonymous (the alleged hacker group) announced/posted a threat to the US about it. That will draw the attention of a lot of anarchist groups like LulzSec was able to achieve the other few months ago.

This type of law will give the US government the power to block access to websites on a global scale. From what I know, their power will extend to the .com, .net and .org websites. So it doesn't matter if a website is based in Europe, Asia, South America or any other continents, if a website using any of the .com, .net and .org domains is blocked, no one in the world will be able to access it.

This is what I call a power-crazy government.

Anonymous' statement (called Operation Blackout)

Citizens of the United States, We are Anonymous.

This is an urgent emergency alert to all people of the United States. The day we've all been waiting for has unfortunately arrived. The United States is censoring the internet. Our blatant response is that we will not sit while our rights are taken away by the government we trusted them to preserve. This is not a call to arms, but a call to recognition and action!

The United States government has mastered this corrupt way of giving us a false sense of freedom. We think we are free and can do what we want, but in reality we are very limited and restricted as to what we can do, how we can think, and even how our education is obtained. We have been so distracted by this mirage of freedom, that we have just become what we were trying to escape from.

For too long, we have been idle as our brothers and sisters were arrested. During this time, the government has been scheming, plotting ways to increase censorship through means of I S P block aides, D N S blockings, search engine censorship, website censorship, and a variety of other methods that directly oppose the values and ideas of both Anonymous as well as the founding fathers of this country, who believed in free speech and press!

The United States has often been used as an example of the ideal free country. When the one nation that is known for its freedom and rights start to abuse its own people, this is when you must fight back, because others are soon to follow. Do not think that just because you are not a United States citizen, that this does not apply to you. You cannot wait for your country to decide to do the same. You must stop it before it grows, before it becomes acceptable. You must destroy its foundation before it becomes too powerful.

Has the U.S. government not learned from the past? Has it not seen the 2011 revolutions? Has it not seen that we oppose this wherever we find it and that we will continue to oppose it? Obviously the United States Government thinks they are exempt. This is not only an Anonymous collective call to action. What will a Distributed Denial of Service attack do? What's a website de face ment against the corrupted powers of the government? No. This is a call for a worldwide internet and physical protest against the powers that be. Spread this message everywhere. We will not stand for this! Tell your parents, your neighbors, your fellow workers, your school teachers, and anyone else you come in contact with. This affects anyone that desires the freedom to browse anonymously, speak freely without fear of retribution, or protest without fear of arrest.

Go to every I R C network, every social network, every online community, and tell them of the atrocity that is about to be committed. If protest is not enough, the United States government shall see that we are truly legion and we shall come together as one force opposing this attempt to censor the internet once again, and in the process discourage any other government from continuing or trying.

We are Anonymous.
We are Legion.
We do not forgive censorship.
We do not forget the denial of our free rights as human beings.
To the United States government, you should've expected us.

The reason why we won't see too much coverage by the mainstream media on this issue is due to the fact that their parent companies are involved and rallying for the law to be passed.

That's how bad the media consolidation is.

For example, did you know that in 1990, around 17% to 18% of daily newspapers were independently owned and operated? In 2005, it was less than 1 percent. It probably would be safe to assume that it's less than 0.5% by now. Maybe even 0.1% because I wouldn't be surprised.

Right, that is pretty un-democratic to not give the freedom of choice for each individual.

:hmm: I have a thought about how to get attention to this on AD for the non-technical people. Will try this in a sec.

What if someone abuse the freedom? Is that how it cause to being consorship? Or is it for media business that Internet plan to be block and force us to buy newspaper in order to keep business for print, reporter or what?

In case it helps, here's how to find your congressional representative and contact info:

Find Your Elected Officials - Common Cause

Since this act is apparently on a fast track its probably not to soon to contact your senators also. Info available at above link also.

Its not 100% accurate -- my block was transferred to another congressional district after the last census and many web sites don't reflect that info -- not just the above one. But for most zip codes it should be accurate.

I just called my Congressman's office and they said they are getting a lot of calls. It makes a difference -- please call or e-mail!

I am annoyed at my congressman (Charles Rangel) though -- his staff will not say what his position on the bill is nor will they call back once he says what it is.

ETA: I also signed the on-line petition in Evo's OP. It's the last link in the thread's first post. Very easy to do.

congrats on being aware of these bills over censorship but the really scary part is that a bill has already been passed that allows obama to warrent "assasinations" of american citizens on/off of amarican turf, as well as detain them indefinitly without a hearing etc. The US is heading towards a dark place and it concerns me, being a neighboring country and all

I already many times research

Take a stance against SOPA in its current form, along with Google, Yahoo, Facebook, AOL, Ebay, Amazon, Namecheap etc. These giant internet tech companies are taking a hard stand against SOPA and are even threatening to blackout on the 23rd of January for a extended period of time to show the world what could happen if SOPA passes.

Read why its important to make such a stance here:

When I updated Firefox 8.0, I received the message about Censorship. I signed the online petition. I agree with what CEO of FF message. Basically Congress was trying to censor or block Piracy on internet. Here's the thing is it's freedom and free country, Congress have to respect our freedom to surf internet. Congress can censor or block one thing which site are illegal BUT they may spread out to site that may "seemly" illegal THEN to site that are not illegal but annoying. It would spread further and further until everyone become restricted to internet that don't have much interest going on there.

Like for example, 14 years ago, in year 1998, While PC were running Windows 95 or 98, I browsed the internet and checking out some site that I unknowingly it was a malware that hijacked the browser. When I was browsing through Free Energy website. I visited once then later I want to visit again. It's no longer there then whenever I visited new sites first time then I visit again, it's no longer there again. I became suspicious that I ACTUALLY thought Government was censoring the site because they don't want anyone to know the secret of Free Energy. Until I decide to swap hard drive that have Mandrake Linux, It turned out that I was able to access to ANY website and revisit with no problems.. I realized that something had been hijacking my Windoz browser. I decide to swap back hard drive and reinstall Windows 95. Finally I was able to freely visit site often. It turned out to be malware. I must admit it was kinda scary and :pissed: me off at the same time.

This give me an example if Government decide to pass Censorship law and they became more manipulative to censor just because the site isn't for you. They can go too far and become like China and also force you to register the "permanent" screename or ID that you sign in to be able to use internet and if Government see you are visiting website that they don't want you be in then they can block you. Registering "permanent and trapping screename that would require you to use your ssn, home address, Federal and State tax info ect that prevent you from trying to use other screenname. If someone like your kids, friends use internet under your SN and they abuse it. You get sucked. It may means that you have to visit office or contact one of office to "release" you from censorship with fees or hire an attorney to fight for you to fix the problem. Also if you want to browse through website uncensored, you may have to pay large fees or hefty monthly fees. Identity thief also can be huge problem to you. So Don't let Congress pass the law requiring everyone to own a permanent sign in SN. I am just saying "iffy" but never know it may happen in the future.

I am very sure that right now Congress can't censor our freedom of surfing website. Right now, our main culprits are DRM, MPAA, and RIAA that attacks personal freedom of downloading music, movies ect. I can understand that they need $$$ for business BUT they can do wrong for example, Dentist student who bought CD worth over hundreds of dollars from college bookstore and CD have DRM in it and it only good for up to 1 year. When student dropped out one class that require CD to study. He retake a year later and still require same CD. He was not able to use to study it on computer. It's a waste of money. While the books that he have can be re-used next year without problem. So that's the good example what DRM can hurt our personal freedom because you just simply decide not to use it till later then you are ready to use it and it turned out you can't use it because the date had expired. It's plain wrong.

I fully endorsed Firefox, FB, Google, and many other companies that provide website to protect our freedom because it need us to enjoy surfing, social networking and many more and it helps their biz big time. I praised them for their effort and care about our freedom
