All British dogs must have microchips by 2016

Nice. I think its a great idea. hope they will process the proper paperwork if owner didn't want a dog at all and swtich the name to other owner.

It saves lives. Our local rescue microchips every pet they save and offer low cost microchipping clinics.
 
Finally! There's farrrrrr too many abandoned dogs/puppies, this will track back to the owners. Hope this will make them think twice before buying a puppy. The fine is £500 if your dog isn't microchipped. My dog Boris is, Hugo the kitten will be microchipped when he's under for neutering at between 4.5-6 months old. I think they won't make cats compulsory due to cats straying easily/wild cats/farm cats.
 
They should have this for cats and dogs. I also think if the animal is found abandoned and they can trace the owner with the chip, that person should be fined for abandonment and prohibited from adopting or purchasing another pet. If only.....

this has been an issue in America - different vendors. microchip system is not the same in entire America. for ie - microchip system in NYC won't work in Texas. it would be nice if it was standardized.

Yup, I'm curious about why cats are exempted.
 
I'm not sure about mandatory microchips in USA, but it will be interesting. It could be constitutional issue.
 
Both my dogs are chipped. As Bott wrote, animal shelters and rescues also have been routinely chipping dogs specifically when they come in or prior to leaving facility when adopted. Other times rescues offer free micro-chipping clinics along with free or reduced-fee spay or neuter, or require as part of the paperwork that the adopter agree to chip the dog.

Microchips are not failproof, Ive had 3 dogs that have failed having the chip read. They do not always work, so whats the difference if its chipped or not? I have mine chipped so if it was to escape the yard, but mainly mine stays indoors with me and with me at all times. I supervise my dog when outside as well. Microchips is the governments way to make another buck.

use your common sense.... and it would be best to find something in the Constitution before you hypothesized...

failed? hmm... probably because of hardware/software incompatibility or the microchip was buried too deep or your dogs went thru somewhere that fried the microchips :dunno:

but a microchip would prove that a dog belongs to somebody... like a collar without tag. at least a dog won't get written off as a stray dog because a home dog will live longer than a stray dog
 
Yup failed, it was a recent chip, you could feel it. When it was inserted, they scan and show you its reading before you leave the vet, we went back about a month later for the second set of shots and the microchip wouldnt read. We never went anywhere and pup was at home with us 24/7 and a month later it didnt work, The vet said they do just die out and it is not uncommon. We have experienced 3 microchips that died out, all from different vets ( some were done at a pet store during a special ) we have several friends in the dog club/shows that had the same thing. So everyone, if you are concerned about your pet getting lost, always have the chip read when you go to the vet to make sure it still works.

The pet owners could sue in the court based on 5th or 14th Amendment, all way to supreme court, so I'm very interested about legal challenge with mandatory microchips.

Right now, I don't think any cities pass the mandatory microchips yet and my argument is moot.

Oh I see, my families don't believe in microchip and they use collar with tag, however, sometime, the collar could lose in anywhere.

ah interesting... sounds like a bad batch of microchips. the company should recall it.
