Has anyone visited 'The Rock' aka Alcatraz Island...the famous prison of the '60's?

I just saw an article in the local newspaper that said:

Terms of Endearment

Fifty years ago they dreamt of escape, but former inmates of Alcatraz went back for a reunion on the island prison yesterday (Saturday, August 9th USA time).
'The longer you are away from a place the softer the memories become," said John Banner, 80, a former bank robber who served four years in the prison that came to be known as "The Rock" in San Francsico Bay.
Before it was romancitised by Hollywood in the 1979 film Escape from Alcatraz - based on the only escape, of three prisoners in 1962 - it was a tough prison for hundreds of hardened criminals, including Al Capone.

Hmm..speaking of Alcatraz being haunted -- I reckon it is, why? Because when I went there on a school excursion when I was in the 3rd or 4th grade, I had gone into one of the cells with a couple of other kids. When we entered the cell, the door slammed shut and was jammed for a few minutes. I panicked despite it opening after a few minutes. The guide who was with us, didn't even close the door or anything! Spooky!

I have visited Alcatraz. I even did a report on it for one of my classes while I was in highschool... It looks pretty scary but when u realize that there is no prisoners so I was pretty safe. Before I entered the prison, there was a headphones that hearing people can listen while they walk to place to place. The people gave me about 30 page story that is same as in the headphones, I gave up and followed what mom was saying, she interptered some of the information. It was pretty neat. I even got a autograph from a woman that grew up on Alcatraz. I really liked that place. I brought several books from Alcatraz, I even watch the tv shows that shows the history.. :D

I have always been fascinated by the history behind Alcatraz and been proud that it was near my hometown. I would take friends from out of town or out of state to Alcatraz and Pier 39. It's sort of become a tourist site now...although, they do keep it in shape and keep up with the history of the prison.

I've never been there before. I have seen the island from the bridge a couple times when I visited San Francisco in 1989.

I went to Alcartaz with my parents on last spring break. I found it interesting. But, I prefer to go there again during evening time and the spirits should scare me!! Boo!!
