Advices on starting a mobile food truck....

I can't say I use them, but they are a big thing here in Boston. There are a lot of articles about which are the best. There have been food truck festivals as well. I believe there is even a cup cake food truck.

I wouldn't put them on the same level as hot dogs stands in NY, but they have been gaining popularity.

I understand it takes more work to run a food truck than a restaurant.

Please check your title. Didn't you intend to have it read Advice on starting a mobile food truck?

Jane, I think most of us realized it was a typo. It would have been nicer if you had PM'd him rather than point it out here in public.

I got talking to a woman that had a hotdog stand and she told it took a lot of money to get started , she needed a permit and grill and ridge cost a few thousand $$ . She did pretty good and during the winter she worked at Market Basket .

You may still be able to edit your title.

I worked in Health and Hospitals division about 8 years and they are really strict on the sanitary conditions of the trucks, must have running water and all the doodads...bells and whistles....

Good friend of mine ran a Hot Dog Stand....(they were delicious)...she told me at one time it cost anywhere to 3-6K...and you would have to go thru a hell of a lot to get licensed....She also said that the disabled might get a stand for Free....:hmm:...I noticed some Trucks/Stands employees did not wear gloves, so I would not order anything from them....I also got food poisoning from a Hot Dog Stand once too.....

Think about the hot and cold weather factors too!...Not an easy job....Plus a good location is a must to make the $$.

My daughter and her daughter and I where down town and we got my granddaughter a hotdog at a stand , she was not able to eat it all and I went to throw it away and it was cold ! I was BS! We told the people at stand and thy refuse to give us back our money b/c it hot was half eaten , I told them my granddaughter is only 4 yo and did not know realize it was not cooked ! I called the health department and they said they'll look into it but I doubt that did anything . It's a small city and they knew the people that owned the stand and I was told by the health department that hotdog is precooked and I was like WTF! So is OK to give a cold hotdog to a child ?

Yes, it's ok to eat a cold hot dog. They are pre-cooked. You are just heating them up when you "cook" them. So there was no need to contact the health dept.

Same with the bacon at Jewel. They have precooked bacon there, just need to warm it up. No harm done.

while I worked with H&H, a guy I worked with ran a hot dog/Brat stand on the Riverfront, actually had several stands/carts... getting the permits are hard since everyone wants them, but they will only allow so many at certain locations... So, if you didnt submit your renewal early, you could easily lose that spot.

Wrong ! Hot food has to be hot ! Hot food has temperature requirements .
 I called the main office of the health department in Boston and I was told hot food has to HOT!!  You're pay for hot food so you have to get hot food ! You're so dead wrong lady. This has nothing to being precooked hot . My granddaughter did not LIKE EATING A COLD HOTDOG !

And I'm telling you you can eat a cold hot dog and not get sick, so no need to call the health dept. Sure, you can complain about it not being hot, which most people prefer, including myself, but there's no health risk unless you have health issues. It's the same as eating Bologna.

I've eaten cold hotdog before after it was cooked. I'd never eat raw hotdog or any meat for that matter. It has to be cooked FIRST. Same concepts when you cook chicken, steak, seafoods etc... They can come in with salad and other cold foods to eat because it was already cooked. You can microwave it to make it hot to eat... no harm done.

If someone gets sick then the foods were not cooked properly or it may be bad foods. Raw makes people sick.

Food served to the public or for costs has to go by the health departments guidelines, everything has to be served at temps . Hot foods has to be a certain temp, cold foods has to be a certain temp... Hot dogs has to be served hot. you can buy them and eat them any way you please, but to serve them to the public either free or at costs, you have to follow guidelines set by the local government period. The schools here no longer allow bake sales, if you sell cookies or cakes, they have to be sealed packaged from the store....

And I telling you if pay hot food is has to HOT !! My granddaughter did not want a COLD hotdog! The sign said HOT DOG!!! Case closed !

Not only that.. a Hot hotdog doesn't stay hot that long after it leaves the food truck or wherever. In the time it takes the kid to eat half the hot dog it could have become cold anyway. Wouldn't one notice the hot dog was cold BEFORE it ever reached the mouth?

Just my viewpoint.
