Less than two years ago we adopted twin baby boys who were only 4 months old when we got them. They have grown like weeds.

Anyone else adopted children here? How old were they when you got them?

My good friend who adopted a deaf china boy. He is 5 years old now. I met him and he is so cool kid.

Rights are terminated and parent(s) have no choice but give up their kids.
It's kind of like stealing. Parent(s) are fighting to get them back. "What is in the best interest of the child" battle, I don't want to deal with that.

I am adopted by my adoptive parents when I was 4 months old. Anyway, for me, I rather to have a natural child because I have the same feeling as Platecafe mentioned. I don't want to deal with any child with different characteristics. I prefer to have my natural child with same interests as well as on same page.

However, I support the concept of adoption though.

Concept of stealing? I hope you are not referring to all parents who behave like that.

No choice? They had a choice when they first have sex...(not in rape situation, of course).

Some of them chose to give child a chance at better life than if they decided to keep a child.

Either that or we have homeless children run around in the alley begging for food and to survive.

Adpoting a child is a great thing to do, but I don't know if I am a worthy one to be a parent. It's a long way before I think about family since I am still in college and thinking what to do after I graduate.

If I do try this process I would like to get a deaf child if it's possible. ^^

Hi
I up this thread because I am doing some research about adoption.

My story : I'd like to adopt a child since I was 16 yo, however now I don't have legal age. Then, recently, I've learnt from my ENT doc and my geneticist (which is ENT doctor too) that there is an exceptionnal risk to lose my hearing if I get pregnant. Since I speak 4 languages, and if I lose my hearing I would never be able to speak them I have chosen not to run this risk.

Do you have any interesting links about adoption ?

Thanks in advance

Define "natural".

Is "natural" the easy way out? Many would prefer the easy way. It reflects upon character.

How do you feel after learn that you are adoptive child? Do you meet your birth mother?

I hope you don´t mind me to ask question.

Is it possible for you to lose the rest of your hearing without becoming pregnant? The reason is that my first thought is "How do I know that the doctor is not using scare tactic to prevent you from passing your Waardenburg syndrome to your children?" Is there a website where it said that one can lose the rest of hearing due to pregnancy if one has waardenburg syndrome? I tried to look it up and didn't see anything like that. Sure there are some site where one said one had lost hearing due to pregnancy but nothing because of WS.

What languages do you know besides French and English? Sometimes I came across French when I look through the genealogy records. Now I know who to ask for French translations. :)

Hi Buffalo
No, it's not possible to lose the rest of my hearing without becoming pregnant, or taking any other risk. This is what my ENT doc told me.
About the Waardenburg syndrom, I don't know yet if I have it.

Besides French and English, I know Italian and Modern Greek. :)

You might want to read this link on AD: http://www.alldeaf.com/introduce-yourself/45200-anyone-have-waardenburg-syndrome.html to meet other WS on this site. I know that R2D2 (Australia) has a biological daughter.

These are what I found out online that would cause declining hearing during pregnancy:
otosclerosis
acoustic neuroma

I'm Adopted myself...but of course that's another matter.

Preston doesn't want to adopt kids, he can't see himself loving them like the way he loves his natural kids. So he just want to have kids of his own, his own flesh and blood.

And that's fine with me, as I always wanted a kid that's related to me by blood...not just by last name. And I already have a son who's blood related to me and that's a great feeling ever!

I love him to pieces.

Hi Buffalo
Your link is interesting and I devored it.
However, my ENT doctor and my geneticist (who is ENT too) told me that during pregnancy and after delivery, there is an exceptionnal (so very rare) risk of losing my hearing on my right side (which is my hearing side). I really can't permit myself to lose this side since I study languages.

And, last but not least, we aren't sure yet for the Waardenburg Syndrom, the genetic tests are pending.

Thanks again

How can you lose those languages when you become deaf?

Becoming deaf will not make you lose your memory.

You learn that 2 + 2 = 4. You become deaf. Are you going to forget what 2 + 2 = ? Nah.

You learn "Como estas?" You become deaf. Are you going to forget "Como estas?"

Hi
I didn't tell you'll lose your memory, but when you become deaf, you lose the capacity of pronunciation in another language than your mother tongue. My mother has a cousin who's deaf. When she was young, she spoke fluent English, but when her deafness has worsen, she has never been able to speak English again. Of course she remebered the words, but is unable to pronounce them clearly.

There's hearing aids and cochlear implants.

Those who can hear before can hear again when they wear CI. Those who never hear before and get CI will have a hard time understanding what they're hearing. Same with hearing aids.

I know there are hearing aid and cochlear implants, but even with them, you will never have a "normal" hearing.
And my mother's cousin wears hearing aid, but she is still unable to speak fluently English.

Did you try getting a second or third opinion?

I've never heard of anyone becoming deaf after getting pregnant.

But then again, there are a million things that COULD happen after a person becomes pregnant. So, that's to be expected. That's part of life.

You have two choices... speak foreign languages or have kids. What do you want?

I've got a second opinion from my geneticist which is ENT too, and my ENT and my geneticist say the sae thing : I might become totally deaf if I got pregnant. So my choice is done : I chose to adopt and speak foreign languages.

You could have a surrogate mom but that costs money. I don't know if they allow that in France. Just an option to bypass your own pregnancy and still have your own kids. If you do go for that, find out the legal part and your rights, etc. Good luck in what ever you do.

By the way, is there a way you can still work in the language department if you do lose the rest of your hearing? (I don't know what kind of job you have or going after.) I am thinking of translation services. I often use freetranslation.com when I want to know a certain word. They do use human translators for business letters, etc.
