I'm new in this forum, so I'll introduce myself. I have been severely to profoundly deaf (90 dB) since I was a baby, having sensorineural hearing loss in both ears from Enlarged Vestibular Aqueduct.

I'm 17 now, and I've just had a cochlear implant surgery on my left ear about 2 weeks ago, and they will activate it next week. Only problem is, I've never had tinnitus except for a few seconds once a month before the surgery. After the surgery, I began having tinnitus all the time, it never stops!

My parents say when they activate it, it will be gone, but I don't believe them. Am I going to be stuck with tinnitus in my left ear for the rest of my life?

Hi, tinnitus will go away eventually. I was implanted in left ear on May 20 and I kept hearing tinnitus all of the time. After they activated my implant, Im still hearing tinnitus. Few months later, its starting to go down and softer. Now, I finally stop hearing tinnitus. Its depend on you. We see what happen then.. and Good luck on your hearing journey!

Hopefully the tinnitus will subside when the implant has been activated. Plenty of people have had an increase in tinnitus after the surgery, probably from the surgery itself interfering with the inner ear. You might still experience tinnitus when you don't have the processor on, you might not.

good luck next week! I have similar loss like you (my left ear dipped in at 100 db at the moment) ;)

So excited for you. My mother has not had hers a year yet and she is still working with it. I hope the tinnitus goes away for you. I get it quiet often and it is very annoying.

Mine has gotten better since my surgery. There is still some there when it's quiet but with my processor on I don't notice it at all. I haven't implanted my left ear yet so I still have some in that ear.

i have been implanted since late june, and i have had tinnitus before and after surgergy but 2 months on, no tinnitus at all, and I didnt even realise until now! you'll be fine, good luck!

So my implant was activated yesterday, along with the new Naida external products from Advanced Bionics! However, I'm only hearing beeping sounds, when will it sound normal?

That depends on many factors. How long you've been without hearing, how much auditory memory you have, were you born with severe/profound deafness, brain plasticity, age, et cetera.

Took two days for the beeping to turn into recognizable sounds for me and two weeks to understand speech without needing to read lips.

Just give it time Dude. Keep wearing your processor everyday, and let your brain make sense of the new signals. I only heard some beeping and nothing else when I was first activated, but after a few days my brain started to "get it" and starting making sense of the new signals, and slowly it turned into speech and sound.

I found it very, very helpful to keep a written journal. Every day I would write a new sound that I heard, plus what ever issues I was having. It's nice to go back and see how far I've come.

I also kept track of what I ate and drank to see if any of it was contributing to my tinnitus.

Wishing you the best.
