A Thread About Absolutely Nothing! Part III

Why is it that everyone always says "Start your own business" when someone says something along the lines of "I'll be looking for something else" etc...

I get that all the time but the thing of it is...and I always say so...it's not my thing. I can't see myself running my own business for many reasons. I'm perfectly happy working in an office (or onsite); MAYBE work from home. Not everyone is cut out for starting their own business. My father and his friend did it for ten years- it really cut into his family time- lots of late nights. He once says he did regret that... and why he's happy he has the chance again with his grandchildren.

Ditto on Vistaprint. I need to look up the company I got my (now useless) business cards...pretty cheap and quick service.

I think most of the ones that suggest that don't know the details of the record keeping and other regulations involved in running a business let alone the time involved in it all.

True but to be fair a lot of that is probably made MUCH easier these days with computerized programs and digital data- notably for record-keeping, invoices. The part that isn't my cup of tea is dealing with people- you are the boss and the employee basically so contact with customers is a must. Taxes is another bear... that probably can be dealt with easily enough with help (CPA).

I'm not knocking it though-- it's great that people have the option to do this and I encourage and support it 100%.

What you say seems true. What I was thinking of are people that have been suggesting it with no idea of the details involved.

I think with the commitment you have to go with your gut, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. DOesn't hurt to try. If you don't try, will regret not trying in the first place. I know from experience I never got to do the things I wanted to do and never did it. I totally regret it!

ahh the "doesn't hurt to try" part. :) That one sometimes drives me nuts too.

I'm the only person that knows myself... and maybe a friend or two who knows me very well- to judge if I'd be good at something or not. There are some things I've done that put me WAY out of my comfort zone but usually came about because I spent a lot of time researching, investigating and/or questioning myself. I'm perfectly happy just working and not be a "leader"/manager/supervisor or any of that lol.

Jane- Yes agree on the "people who suggest it have no idea of the details involved" but I do wonder sometimes if some say that now because they THINK it's easier to set up a business these days than it used to be. Who knows...

being in a space that you are not comfortable with, just means you are not ready or dont want to try... doesnt mean its not meant to be, but I am sure a lot of people will agree with you that they are just happy just working and not to have to deal with THE EXtra work. It can be a headache sometimes/.

It's not a matter of "I don't want to try" (for ME at least) or "not ready", being in a space I'm not comfortable with - for example being a Team Lead or Project Manager- for me is just plain "no- that is not my style and I am not comfortable dealing with people and delegating". On top of that...it's a taaad more challenging when you are Deaf and your team is Hearing. I could get away with it as I do voice but understanding the team members is another issue altogether lol (without interpreters- they're HARD to get when scheduling meetings tend to be ridiculously last minute most times in IT). Gotta pick my battles lol.

My comfort zone and my stepping out of it is that I don't particularly like change...and/or fear of failure. Though interestingly once I dive in, I'm okay with change and can adapt pretty well. I don't know what others view my "comfort zone" as- as recently I heard/saw a LOT of people commenting on the whole Utah adventure as my really going outside of my "comfort zone".

I have a devil on one shoulder, and an angel on the other shoulder. I’m deaf in one ear. Which ear is it?

Deaf ear is the side where the angel resides :D

Although...you could say deaf in both ears and march to the thump thump thump of your own drum (That would be me).
