Nice to see you all Some I recognize from other forums, some are new faces, and I look forward to getting to know you and sharing new experiences.
A bit about me:
I'm a 34 year old single woman, currently in the process of going back to school and completing my education. I was diagnosed with sensorineural deafness when I was 9 years old following a bout of bacterial meningitis. In the years that followed, I learned to lipread, sign and wore hearing aids.
I attended Rochester Institute of Technology for several years, but made some bad decisions and ended up dropping out before I achieved my goals (hence my desire now to return to school.)
My family is all hearing, and I always felt like a "fence straddler," neither fitting into the hearing world or the deaf worlds. I was approved for the clinical study for the Cochlear Nucleus System 4 (now called Freedom.) Implantation was January 24th 2005, and activated on April 12th 2005. Its been almost a year now and its been one of the most wonderful and rewarding experiences of my life.
