I have a question...

Here's what we already know. A man and a woman get married and have 3 kids. You're the kid in the middle. The other two kids are your brother and sister. Your parents are your mom and dad. Right?

Well, if your mom becomes single (divorced or father dies)... then she marries another guy... that would make that guy your stepfather. Your stepfather has 2 kids... a boy and a girl. That would make them your stepbrother and stepsister. Right?

Now, here's where my question comes in...

Your mother dies and your stepfather is now single. He later marries another woman. What does that make this woman? Your stepmother or your step-stepmother? What about her kids? She has 2 kids... a boy and a girl. Would that make them your step-stepbrother and step-stepsister?

It would be odd having a stepmother and stepfather. People would be confused by this statement. :dizzy:

What's your take on this?

my mom got remarried in 1994 to my step-dad Donald Lallemand but he died in 2000 dues dialysis but my step-dad been sick for longtimes.

i had great relationship with my step-siblings 2 step-sisters and 2 step-brothers 4 of them got married and have add family.

I think technically, since the person is still under the "stepfather's" care, it would technically make the new bride a stepmother by legal definition. Since both biological parents are deceased, this is the only terms available to fill the rest of them.

But as a family I guess that would make it an extended family, since no one is of direct blood relation. I personally wouldn't even call the late partner a "step", even if they are technically by American nature, I would rather call them by their first name.

There are no legal "step"^2 names for any extended family I think, by that I mean step-stepdad step-stepbro step-stepsister etc, I've never heard of it and google results are coming blank.

But in other cultures, I know these names are covered.

There are three types of relationships defined in our world.

Genetics; this helps those in the medical field treat each patient depending on their ancestry.

Legal; this helps the law determine such things as inheritance and eligibility for income tax deductions.

Relationships; this depends solely on now two or more people feel and act towards each other and cannot be governed by any set rules of genetics or laws. It is based solely on the roles we play in each others lives.

There are no steps in my family.

VampyroX, we actually have that situation in my family.

My siblings and I refer to our "step-stepmother" as our "mère éloinée" which means the "mother once-removed" or something along those lines. It litearlly means "distanced mother." And we refer to her daughter as our "soeur éloinée" which means something like our "sister once-removed" (or literally our "distanced sister." They're French and French Canadian so we only bothered with a term in French. The only reason we bother with those terms is because we're not very close to them and they've made no effort to become closer despite several attempts from our side. As for my stepbrothers, I just called them my brothers. I call their wives my sisters-in-law and their children I call my niece and nephew. They feel more like brothers to me, so I don't bother with the "stepbrother" and "step-niece" or anything like that.
