When I was born I had meningitus which caused a severe hearing loss in my left ear and a minor one in my right. As time (and every ear infection) goes by, my right ear seems to be hearing less and less. My parents sent me to a hearing school because they were told I wouldn't ever speak if I learned sign language (I went to speech lessons for years and my peers teased me often because of my speaking skills). They made a huge mistake and I'm paying for it now. I do know some sign language but I'm not as fluent as I'd like to be, and as the years pass it's becoming impossible for me to keep up with my family and friends. Is there any way to find deaf people in my area and learn through them? I'd appreciate any advice I can get.

Sincerely,
CAT

Hello and welcome to Alldeaf icebaby313!

You may want to check locally to see if there is a Deaf Club where you'll find some who would be willing to help you out learning ASL....also, if you're not too far from a state school or college where a majority of deaf students attend, that's another place to check in as well.

Also, hope you'll enjoy your stay here in AD and there's a great group of people here in AD that could very well help you out too! :)

:welcome: to the forum! Because of your hearing loss, it's a mistake for your parents to send you to hearing school. A deaf club or a college for the deaf (where deaf people attended deaf college) or a state school is a good way to go.
