Calling a third party (friend or family member) doesn't seem like the best way to get fast emergency service.  What if they don't answer right away?  If your house is on fire, or someone is breaking into the house you don't have time to wait.  Also, if you're under a lot of stress and fear, it's not easy to text a clear message.
