KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — A military helicopter was shot down in eastern Afghanistan, killing 31 U.S. special operation troops, most of them from the elite Navy SEALs unit that killed al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden, along with seven Afghan commandos. It was the deadliest single incident for American forces in the decade-long war.

The Taliban claimed they downed the helicopter with rocket fire while it was taking part in a raid on a house where insurgents were gathered in the province of Wardak late Friday. It said wreckage of the craft was strewn at the scene. A senior U.S. administration official in Washington said the craft was apparently shot down by insurgents. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the crash is still being investigated.

NATO confirmed the overnight crash took place and that there "was enemy activity in the area." But it said it was still investigating the cause and conducting a recovery operation at the site. It did not release details or casualty figures....

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. officials tell The Associated Press that they believe that none of the Navy SEALs who died in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan had participated in the raid that killed Osama bin Laden, although they were from the same unit that carried out the bin Laden mission.
Sources say that more than 20 Navy SEALs were among those lost in the crash in Afghanistan.

The operators from SEAL Team Six were flown by a regular Army crew. That's according to AP military sources.
Another source says the team was thought to include 22 SEALs, three Air Force air controllers, seven Afghan Army troops, a dog and his handler, and a civilian interpreter, plus the helicopter crew.

The sources thought this was the largest single loss of life ever for SEAL Team Six, known as the Naval Special Warfare Development Group.
All sources spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive military matters.

22 SEALs?
It takes a lot of work/time to become SEAL and it ended quickly. Very sad.

Me too. Such a great loss, both personally for their families, and a great loss of knowledge and skill for the U.S. military.

It sounds fishy in the story. It is so sad. See the blue bolds that does not make a sense.

Confusing... but tragic indeed. Since they're SEALs, will we ever know who they are?

Probably not b/c the seals that killed bin Laden feared for their safety and also their families safety.

I was bummed out when I read the story. Indeed, very sad. I wanted to be a navy seal as growing up.

EDIT: I will remember this tragedy for a long, long time.

Well, one seal identified so far. He was just engaged with his gf and told his family he'll be back by thanksgiving. He was deployed just last month. He already been to iraq war and fought in Africa.

this is ironic.... SEALs got killed when trying to help out Rangers in Afghanistan this time... and several years ago - Rangers got killed when trying to help out SEALs in Afghanistan too. My best friend was part of it (75th Regiment). He lost 2 comrades. He got a PTSD because of it. The worst part was that he was a medic and he couldn't do diddly squat. This was especially a lot for a guy right out of high school to take it in....

My thoughts and prayer are with the families of heroes.

The troops including Navy Seals are usually rotated based on a specific amount of time like six months, etc.

Also the DEVGRU tends to assign Navy SEALS Team Six members to specific missions based on their skills and experiences.

Although the number of Navy SEALs Team Six members are classified, I believe they are between 100 to 300 members.
