Hi all,

Someone on another board recommended this site to me today!

I'm a youngish person here (30) hoping to get some advice and support. I was diagnosed at the start of this year with moderate neural hearing loss in both ears. It seems I'm mostly missing the lower tones. I've had a history of autoimmune issues (RA, Uveitis), which may be related. There is some hearing loss in my family, but none in folks as young as myself.

At first my doctor speculated that my hearing loss might be related to the plaquenil I was taking for my RA, but stopping that drug didn't seem to help.

Now I'm thinking of getting hearing aids as I'm having difficulty with my work due to not hearing well. I can sign up to increase my flex account at work at the turn of the year, so hopefully that can help defray the costs. Does anyone have advice as to what to ask and do when 'shopping' for a hearing aid at the audiologist? What features do you find helpful? Please let me know of any other general advice you may have regarding hearing loss.

Thank you.

Regards,
TinyFish

Welcome to AD TinyFish. I cant help you with your hearing aid question, sorry.

Good Luck

there's an aid out there for nearly every type of loss and at multiple frequency defecits.......quality vs cost is the biggest issue.....I wished I'd have done the flexible spending account for mine. I invested heavily on top quality new line digitals powerful enough for my profound loss. Remember, you will get a trial period on nearly every hearing aid company and audiologist, so investing the time wisely and being particular will pay big dividends in your future of the benefits of your hearing aids.

to AD.. it would be hard to say which hearing aid is right for you to use as there are losses specificially fitting for each losses like in my case severe to profound hearing loss. so its better to ask the audiologist as they do know which one right for you to use. if you are not sure.. you can always ask audiologist questions. :) meanwhile I hope you will enjoy the stay with us and happy posting away! :)

Hi All,

Thanks for the welcome. I have a little more than moderate hearing loss.
I will be looking for a new hearing aid for both ears. I wear just one now and sometimes have to fake that I hear something, but that doesn't always work and I am sure I look clueless at times. Two will be better. Has anyone here heard of Phonak?
I understand that an aspirin regamine (sp) can cause ringing in the ears. I also read that it can ruin the hairs in the ear canal and cause hearing loss. Any one hear or read of this?
