Hello everyone!

Today is Day Two of my activated CI. I have the Bionics Harmony series. I'm 24 years old and have been profoundly deaf my whole life (diagnosis was progressive hearing loss). I always used bilateral digital HA until my CI.

So far, things are interesting. I enjoy simple sounds like keyboard clicks, my finger tapping on the table, and laughter. But voices still sound terrible for the most part -- buzzing and high pitched almost. Its hard to explain but for those who have CIs, you understand. I'm interested in learning how long it took before voices became more human and less alien! My doctor said about a week...is that a good estimate for those of you who have experienced CI activation?

Thanks for everyone's stories!

I won't be able to answer for myself until after my activation, which I expect would be early June. My CI surgery is set up for May 17th [yep, 4 more wks from today!] but after talking to my audi and the surgeons and reading other people's experiences/stories on their CI journeys. Many stated they had started hearing voices normally in about a week. Some as soon as hours or even a day. I hope I'm one of the lucky ones. lol.

I'm like you, deaf since birth but have always had bilateral HA and have always been hearing things. I still hear out of my L HA but I don't use my R HA anymore but Drs said that I shoudn't have a problem since that side have years of 'hearing' via the HA.

I wish you the best luck with your CI! :]

Hi there and welcome.

When I was first activated voices sounded just as you described for about an hour and then they gradually became more normal. My husband sounded like a woman and then gradually like a man, I think the next day. I have a Nucleus Freedom though so I'm not sure if that affects adjustment times or anything.

It's a time that requires a lot of patience for the first few months - are you keeping a journal of your experiences? I found that really helpful because I could look back on my improvements. Keep us posted on your progress :)

Rebel,

How much time between the surgery and activation? I ask because when my daughter was re-implanted the gap was a week and she felt that as the swelling went down over time, it also helped to make what she was hearing with her new ci, similar to what she had heard with her old one.

Can you listen to music that you once heard before?

Keep us posted of your progress.
