Back in 1990,

When I first got a new job at Goverment office, My supervisor told me it's break time. So I went downstair to break room. There were 1970's style vending machines lined up on the wall with one new 80's style pop machine. The pop can in vending machine cost 45 cents back then and I didn't want to spend that much. I spotted Soda dispenser vending machine that have 4 flavors of pops (Coke, 7UP, Orange, Rootbeer) for 25 cents! Cheap!! I went ahead and dropped quarter in and watched the cup plunked down and poured till it filled close to the brim and stopped. I drank the pop and it tasted good. But after a while, I felt a little nauseated but it wasn't bad though.

Two weeks on a job. After drinking cups of pop.

One day........

I was in the break room and drinking pop from same machine. I saw Vendor came in and open each machines to refill candies, pop cans, cigarettes then... opened and checked Soda dispensing machine...

Do you know what turns your stomach!!! :ugh: :jaw: :barf:

I saw something crawling all over inside the soda machine. :eek2:

COCKROACHES!!!

:iobarf::dizzy:

No wonder why I was feeling little nauseated every time I drinks cup of pop!!!

I learned a really hard lesson from drinking pops from 25 cents Soda machine!! Never trust any vending machine that plops cup and pours in such as Coffee, Hot Chocolate and Tea. Vendors don't clean them!!!

That's the lesson

Seriously! :squint:

Well, I already didn't trust them, but now I will never eat anything from a vending machine!

I agree with you. I just only buy if it's wrapped or canned (don't buy iced rolls or cup cakes cuz wrappers are flimsy). I cleaned the can before I open it.

Last week, my co worker left a note on machine that she saw a bug crawling inside the wrapped Sara Lee's iced rolls inside that machine. I wouldn't touch that machine tho.

Ewwwww

I love the old style machines. With proper care and cleaning, you shouldn't have a problem.

My wife collects anything Coca Cola and she has a buttload of'em on her shelves.

I'd love to get a old Coke Machine in good condition, mint if possible. She likes the one where you grab a coke bottle and wiggle it from left to right while it makes a clinking noise and then pull it out from the secured "door" as it were. Then pop the cap off with the cap remover on the side of the machine (or front, either works).

She'd die happy if she had that in her collection.

Yup. I remmy that very well. The bottle soda pop machine which have bottle lined up on left side of machine with narrow glass door. My brother found a way to hack bottle pop machine into getting free, like buy one, get other free. Since the machine's mechanism was old and worn, He paid 15 cents and pulled one bottle halfway and then pulled the other of his choice of pop and wiggle it out then finally pulled same time.

I have seen very mean and cruel trick that one customer brought over the cup and bottle cap opener and opened the bottle still in the side of machine and tilt it foward till it's empty then leave. Thus leaving several empty bottle that you don't want to buy and few options on other flavors you don't like.

I recalled trick by putting bolt washer size of dime which can be found around out on Gas Station with garage (bottle pop machine was 10 cents back in early 70's) and drop it in and you pick you want and pull it out just the cost of the washer :giggle: I'm sure that Vendor was so pissed that he lost money on that.

My cousin have old fashioned Coca Cola bottle pop machine that you pull the pop bottle on bottom hole (I think it dated back in 1920's or 1930's). Inside of machine is a big circle with pop bottle holders around it. When dispensed, it rotates till the bottle align to bottom hole to allow you to pull out. It is a fully functional machine. He fixed the parts and got it working. It use 10 or 12oz glass coke bottle that you can find one in local grocery store (during Christmas time) or specialty store.

The Soda dispensing machine no longer around because it was health hazard and vendors don't have time to clean sticky nozzle and surroundings that attracts cockroaches and you-know-what behind the front cover.

You might find some old bottle pop machines still in operation in Kansas and Missouri small rural towns. I came across one of them two weeks ago and still in operational condition and cost 50 cents (machine look old and worn but works). Wow that's nostalgic.

um, wtf? cockroaches are a sign of bad management. Im sorry you had to go through that crap.

I never use vending machines cause they charge too much and only accepts cash and I don't use cash. I'd rather bring my yummy lunch to work.

ewwww...I would of had my stomach pumped and taken 3 boxes of X-lax!....Gross! Damn! That gives me the chills.....Nasty!

This is the exact reason why I wash the top of my soda cans, before I pop the top.

People call me crazy when I do... Especially if you drink from the can.. No one knows who has been handling the can that you drink from before hand. Nor they know what has been crawling on it.

I do the same thing I never drink from a can till I wash it first :)

It was bad management. Vendor seem didn't care if cockroaches crawling behind the door and just check to be sure the soda canister are full or not.

Before I got transferred to new building, I heard that they were getting a new vending machines in old building. When I left. I didn't bother to check. My new building had better vending machines and much cleaner. Later on now, I was transferred again back to same old building. They had new vending machines. I'm not bothering any of those machine due to my bad experience.

That was back then 90's.

It's also important to clean top of can cuz who knows rat or mouse pee on the can. On newspaper years ago, I read about guy who worked at Grocery store, He took pop can from back storage and drank it. in 20 min later, he was sick suddenly and went to hospital. He died in an hour. The guy told them just before he died that he drank the pop that made him sick. They checked the pop can that he drank. They found dried mouse pee on top of the can.

Scary

OMG!

After reading your post I think I will wash the cans twice for now on :)

regardless, I still clean off all my canned goods and bottles. the dust and grime that builds up on those items before they are sold is surprising. the soda I bought at the super market yesterday had a gritty dust on it. so washed it off, I like to make sure everything is clean before consuming...

I only buy junk food and soda from vending machines. once ate a tuna sandwich from one when at 17 and got really sick :barf:

... I glad you brought it up. Boy, it is good thing that I don't buy it so often from the machine. Yet, surprisingly, I don't get sick yet! :cold:

Scary. Okay, I already keep in that mind. :cold:
