You Might Have to Bring Your Parents Though

Two states are considering bills that would drop the drinking age. The List's Bradley Hasemeyer shares what we know.

1. California residents with vote on bill that would drop the drinking age to 18.

2. Minnesota law makers are considering bills that would allow 18, 19 and 20 year olds to drink in bars and restaurants...only if they are with a parent, guardian or spouse over 21.

3. The legal age in liquor stores would still be 21.

Why??? Who is trying to pass this bill the funeral homes and insurance companies ???

The idea behind it is probably similar to what led to the voting age being changed to 18 although the article does not say what prompted these bills. Remember the argument that if they could join the military and die for their country they should be able to vote. The idea behind the current push to lower the drinking is probably similar.

It is for that argument that I support lowering the drinking age... Besides... At 18 one is considered an adult... As an adult should they not be able to make their own decisions...

They should not?

There was talk over the years about certain countries who don't enforce a legal drinking age. The idealogy behind that was if people (actually children, if you look at their ages) started early, they would develop wisdom and accustomability (sp?), and not abuse it the way people who must wait until they're 21 do and get all hyped up about it and go get plastered on their 21st birthday, and thereon. Not sure I agree with that ideology, but it kind of makes sense in some ways. Anyways, I'm curious if the idea behind the bill about allowing 18-19-20's to go with their parents is intended the same way - they're legally adults, but having to hang out with parents makes them be a little bit more responsible about it. JMHO.

Got disagree with ya gal Europe drinking age 18 and far less problems.Kids see wine at table and taught appropiate drinking Go any Latin country unlikely see drunk 18yr olds.Kids often have watered down wine at table.
I hate see anyone drink in public and When I see it sold in inappropriate places like trains that's when politicians should take a stand

Yet, when they are 18 they can get married, buy a car/house, live on their own, pay bills, and get blown up in foreign lands... But they have to get mommy or daddy to go hold their hand at a bar?
If we say they are an adult at 18, should we not treat them as adults?

I totally agree. I was talking about how parents treat their kids at a younger age - far less than 18. That's also why I don't understand your post:

Why can't they make their own decisions?

What about my post lost you?
They should be able to make their own decisions.. Legally, morally, and the rest they are considered adults...

The confusion probably comes from a quick reading of post #4 and taking it to say "they should not" rather than the " As an adult should they not be able to make their own decisions..." that it actually is as almost a question rather than a statement.

Got it. I put the should in the wrong place when I read it. I read it as "they should not." Sorry! :)

Hmm.. True, although I do not always add a question mark for rhetorical questions... However, maybe I should start...

I think if you lived in my city and saw how bad teenage boy drive around here you would feel difference . It bad enough driving around here we sure don't need drunk 18 yo on the road too. I am still in pain from a teenage driver T boning my car . I don't know what kind of drivers you have in Europe but we have a lot rude aggressive drivers and AAA just reported drivers are more aggressive than ever . Once a law does pass in California other states seem to follow them .

Illinois has made several changes over the years.

http://www.ask.com/government-politics/did-illinois-change-legal-drinking-age-3dca6133c68e89a8
"After Prohibition ended in 1933, Illinois changed the drinking age to 21 for men and 18 for women. In 1961, Illinois raised the drinking age to 21 for everyone. In 1973, the drinking age for beer and wine was lowered to 19. In 1980, it was raised back to 21."

And here is one that talks about the idea behind the difference for gals and guys.

My lifestyle was such that it really didn't make a noticeable difference but I got caught in the change from 18 to 21 for females.

I believe the younger generation prefers Weed over Alcohol...Still, a lot do both of them at the same time...hence driving stoned and drunk at the same time....

Hence, reminds me of the song....."It's just a comfort to take the Bus...and leave the driving to us!"

As for being 18 and "old enuf" to make their own decisions?...Say what? They're not. Even tho' legally, they are.

Feel the age should be upped to 21 to join the Military, same as for drinking/buying alcohol and weed.

I noticed many 18 years old are immature - freshmen housing is one of worst place to visit.

They are immature with no experience and still go to their parents...for $$...shelter...and advise. But knowing teenagers first-hand.......when they become 18...they say..."I'm 18 and a grown-ass man"!..."you can't tell me what to do!"...and in the same sentence...."Can I have $20?"....:giggle:

If parents say no, teens could shoplifting in store and end up in jail.

The jail and prison are daycare for adults who won't take responsibility anymore.

Prison guards are babysitters for adults.

When I had Finlay I took him for walks and we would walk pass the high school . I had to be careful b/c there broken glass from the Mini Bottle Nips
the kids drink booze right in front of high school and the sidewalk was littered with broken glass.
