How about PREVENTING this in the FIRST place?!?!? Domestic violence SUCKS, and is the symptom of a CRAPPY relationship. We need to IMPROVE our dhh kids' social abilities, so they don't get sucked into crappy realtionships in the FIRST place!

Well, if we can stop mainstreaming deaf children into isolation maybe we would have some hope.

how? look at the deaf schools, some popular girls like to be with the jocks who often abused them to prove they are men. Most of the male administrators practiced it.
I saw it at Gallaudet. Couples came in from deaf schools, then they get drunk and fight. then break up.

I don't see how domestic violence can be prevented in the 1st place...many couples fall in love and are blind to the symptoms, or just overlook them. And no matter if their friends/counselors tell them they need to stay away from the guy/girl...they don't listen. Plus, you can marry someone, thinking it's just perfect...and later on, the violence starts....Many are brain-washed, thinking it's all their fault "he beats or verbally abuses" them....

I agree with you, Robin. Domestic violence will never go away. We've been trying to educate young people about it for a very long time, dm continues as frequently as ever, sad but true!

Ditto! It's a multiple issues thing, but a BIG part of it with dhh kids is that they may not have the world's best social skills, especially if they are mainstreamed or oral. They then meet a person who isn't exactly stable, but b/c they are so desperate for love and affection (and they don't generally have the world's best background on what a relationship is, much less a healthy one) they may think it's better then it is. I see this ALL the time with the HOH mainstreamed to the max adults with my syndrome. .... they get sucked into horrible realtionships b/c they don't really have a lot of good relationship background.......If they were in Deaf ed, they could make REAL DEEP friendships, and thus NOT be sucked into horrible realtionships b/c they are so desperate for friends/love etc.......

I'd like that for this program to grow and be reliable. I have seen many deaf ladies who have been through this DV. They need some support from the concerning people.
