The Ninjago lego set I got my son for christmas had 2028 pieces...ouch. And it was no easy task to build

Nope...lol I lay a blanket out and he plays with them on that, when he is done we pick up the corners and funnel it all back into the duffle bag we keep them in Along with his many other Ninjago stuff.
