Hello , i need help on fiction story and i cannot find much case/example on CI practise. May be some people here, can help me with link to article/site or some knowledge to my charactor.
in my story there is 2deafblind girls(both deafblind since birth)
first girl is not totally deaf, just profoundly loss, but her hearing cannot be any used at all in speech. she received her CI at 13 and my curious is,

1. I don't know how long i should adjust for her to practise till she can use her speech efficiently. (she turn it on most of the time and giving hard practise).
2. how long she will be skipping school for CI operation. 1week? 2weeks? 1month?
3. will she be able to hear it like normal hearing person with CI.
4. if answer to question 3 is "no" and if she received the CI since birth, will she be able to hear like normal hearing person?
5. if answer to question 3 and 4 is "no", for a person who has hearing and speech but lost it later. will they be able to hear it like normal hearing person with CI?
6. if answer to question 3 and 4 and 5 is "no", if the technology improves, will that be possible or still difficult to achieve to that level.

i don't want her to receive CI but i have no clue which medical condition i should have for her as excuse. i try to search but cannot find case where teen cannot get CI, so...

7. Is there any case where teen cannot have operation?/cochlear implant?

Interesting subject... But I cannot help you on "deaf-blind".
There might be some deaf-blind persons on this message board but I'm not sure..
One person who might be able to help you on this forum is jillio. She has much experience with deaf and Deaf children and advising parents in making choices for their children.
She will be an excellent source. Try to contact her via a PM.

CI operation is about 2 hours per side, 3-4 if explanting and implanting. Expect a week to 3 weeks recovery (it depends on the person. First day after surgery i was fine, then got really dizzy so I couldnt go anywhere for 2 weeks)

? Thats the goal right? She wont hear 100% like hearing but a lot better than nothing, and she will hear a lot from water splashes, to whispering to yelling. But again everyones is different, for me i hear very well but I know few people that hear horrrible with CI.

My belief is the younger theyre implanted, the better speech/hearing they will have. my saying "its like training a dog when theyre puppies, they train easier younger, same with the cochlea, training it"

Takes practice and intense speech classes. Dont expect amazing results at firsst, takes time.

Still deaf, technology may make it easier to hear but still, its how you are adpated to the implants.

actually, just deaf part is enough since i'm have so many question with CI in my head, hehe.

And by age nine, there is zero chance that they will learn to speak properly

oh, so bad she is 13 but this is a great info.

not really a goal, but just want to know where is her limited in learning on CI ... i read on your signature about CI broke, 5times implant!! (O__O)

I'll answer the questions I know:

1. Dunno.
2. Dunno.
3. She may be able to hear at the same decibel levels as a hearing person, but the sound won't be the same as a hearing person hears because a CI can't replicate the thousands upon thousands of hair cells within a normally functioning cochlea. And it doesn't mean she understands what she's hearing.
4. See 3. Though typically, you can't get a CI at birth.
5. See 3.
6. Dunno.
7. Structural abnormalities (i.e. no cochlea), not enough hearing loss, culturally Deaf and plain don't want the thing... the list goes on

Though in the case of the last one, that person would probably not want the fictional technology in your story either.

One question for you though: Are you writing this online (i.e. on a website like fictionpress.com), or are you writing a full-fledged book that you hope to get published? I ask because I write fanfiction and I love mentoring and helping out writers.

Either way, I commend you for looking for information instead of just writing about a subject you don't know diddly about. (I know I've made that mistake.)

Actually i did google on many site.

The info for daily basis and activities of deaf-blind not hard to find but CI is really difficult. Most case on internet talks about how adult at age over 20-30 getting CI. i know the younger the better but i don't know where is the proficiency i should adjust for my girl(my charactor).

as for last qustion. i accept that I haven't done a good research because i mostly found the document with heavy medical word that i partly understand. >_<" and too lazy to open dictionary so just come asking for any diesease randomly. hehe

when i did first search, the world of deaf/blind/deafblind is like a whole new world to me. i need to flip all idea in my head. deafblind can do everything that i think they cannot. what most astonishing to me is, there're blind ppl working as programmer O_O" it seem to be a lot work load to me without sight

One question for you though: Are you writing this online (i.e. on a website like fictionpress.com), or are you writing a full-fledged book that you hope to get published? I ask because I write fanfiction and I love mentoring and helping out writers.

I write it online but in thai language, not english. my english is not good enough for any fiction. lol

i just love writing and reading.

do u also shut yourselve down from environment when you write like mines? lol.

No. Google "cochlear implant hearing simulations". Some web sites will pop up.

A cochlear implant requires an intact auditory hearing nerve, and obviously an intact brain. If the brain wave technology exists in your story for the deaf-blind girl, then there is no reason why the other girl couldn't use it also. Hmm, I'm probably misunderstanding your post.

Yes -- cochlear aplasia (absense) would be one case. In medicalese it would be a "contraindication."
