Will the new health exchanges cover HAs?

There are more and more plans that cover--at least partially-hearing aids. Again, it's not the insurance company that dictates the coverage, it's the company that buys the plan that picks the features and most companies won't pay the extra to have hearing aid coverage.

Need to STOP Cochlear Implant on Deaf babies

I've lived in both worlds....the hearing world is FAR superior....keep implanting babies so they have a chance to live in the hearing world!!! If they choose not to later, they simply don't wear their processors..easy as that.

Will the new health exchanges cover HAs?

The health exchanges are just websites, they aren't plans. It depends on where you live and the insurance policies in your area. I know in NY many of the plans have some coverage for hearing aids, but not full coverage. In my area, they don't.

    Question about CI...urgent

Recovery time for most people is pretty minimal really. Most people can be back at work within a week of surgery. It's minimally evasive so not much trauma to recover from. You will be on lifting restrictions but that is pretty normal for just about any surgery so if you have a job that...

    Question about CI...urgent

He may be the only Dr at Wash U but there are doctors in all of the major medical centers in STL, Barnes, STLU, etc. that do CI's. A quick google search will show that.

    Question about CI...urgent

Sounds like a similar experience that my aunt has with her Cochlear. She had sudden loss and was implanted within a month of that loss and does fine one on one but can't hear in crowds, music is terrible, etc. I'm just so happy that was not my experience at all with AB. We recently had a...

    CI insurnace

I looked into getting insurance on my HA's and the break even point just never worked out--meaning, I'd need new HA's before paying for the insurance made sense. CI's are a lot more expensive so it might be worth it but the premiums are based on cost so my feeling is that it would be the same...

    Question about CI...urgent

I wouldn't hesitate to get 2 implants at the same time then. Had I known how well this was going to go for me I would have done both at once..but I have residual hearing that helps, but I couldn't function with just that hearing. I can't locate sound for anything--never could with my HA's...

    Question about CI...urgent

Sounds for me at first were odd--very mechanical/robotic. I still have a bit of that for some sounds but for the most part, things sound like they should. I do pretty well with music but it's not 100% normal. Songs on the radio that have a lot of electric guitar sounds are bad, but over a...

To Cochlear Implant or to re-Hearing Aid; know thyself what you want, my Deaf ears?

Rehab is practice listening to voices, sounds, etc. If you are not doing that, you are not giving your CI a fair shot. I think you are missing out on getting help on Hearing Journey but whatever, it's your choice....

Welp...looks like I may need an MRI

You can always get another implant but you really can't come back from the dead... Insurance premiums--just make sure you really look at the total costs. Is the extra premium less then what you pay out of pocket, often times it ends up costing more to do that. Have you gone for a second...

To Cochlear Implant or to re-Hearing Aid; know thyself what you want, my Deaf ears?

I had sudden loss about 18 years ago that gradually declined. My speech scores before my implant were in the 18% range, at 3 months post implant they are in the 90% range. I wore HA's for 17 years. I'm supposed to be wearing my left HA but it's just worthless for me so I'm not very good about...

Welp...looks like I may need an MRI

I asked at 3 different MRI places before I got my CI and none of them would do any MRI's on ANYONE with a CI, Med-El or not. They didn't want to risk the liability. Just something to look into. Obviously that is not all of them but, that was what I found out.

To Cochlear Implant or to re-Hearing Aid; know thyself what you want, my Deaf ears?

Sorry but having both I stand by what I said... I'm not an expert, just a user of both and I never got the sound clarity and ability to hear well with a HA like I have with my CI. Technology has changed in the CI world, a LOT, in 12 years...

    Getting the right adjustment

Bring one in with you. Bring a Ipad, tablet, cell phone, etc. Honestly, I never got the "right" HA adjustment. It only got worse as my hearing got worse. They just aren't the right equipment for some people and they can only do so much.

    Funny thing happened today

I do NOT miss having to deal with feedback :D My husband said one night, several years ago, that one of my HA's squealed all night...well, duh, like I could hear it--wake me up or move the battery compartment more...:laugh2:

    CI evaluation tomorrow

I had the same experience at my ENT's office. I ended up going to a different clinic for my CI even. I would have qualified much earlier if someone had said something....but on the flip side, since you are choosing AB, the new electrodes and processor is worth the wait :D
