    Adjustment to late onset deafness

I don't know if any of you have seen my previous posts, but don't "kick" me out for being born with hearing loss versus starting to lose it later in life. :) I wanted to give people an update on myself and I find that there has been a significant amount of change to where I notice a, not...

    An identity developed in silence

This is an article from the Michigan Daily, the campus newspaper of the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, published on November 17, 2004. An identity developed in silence - The Michigan Daily I admit I have a very personal reason to post this. Can you guess?

    deaf accent!

Yes I agree that hearing people playing deaf characters have mocked the deaf in their portrayals and yes I agree that for movie productions and the like, one should try to get a deaf/hh actor to play the role (unless it is a story about a late-deafened, first showing them hearing then deaf, then...

Deaf teen finds unsuspecting ally at Rockville cinema

Because of this story, I went there yesterday to watch a movie. I was thinking I would need to find the information/help/service desk so I could ask how the captioning worked, how to get it set up on my iPhone (I assumed that was what they used due to the article). So I was a little flustered...

    At&t vrs

I just learned about this. I just started with them Nov 10th about, so I needed to switch my number (rather than giving everyone a new number for a second time in as many months). I am now with Purple, hopefully they have good service and will be around for awhile.

    whats wrong with my family?

I need to finish writing my email to my family/friends that, due to changes with my hearing (both with loss and sensitivity), I've decided that I cannot and will not be using hearing aids, I will no longer be using voice, I've already gotten rid ofmy voice plan for my cell phone, but I will only...

    Becoming Voice-Off

(Hope you like smileys) I want to give a little background on myself 1st. While I am familiar with a lot of the difficulties of people born/growing up deaf (I was born with mild-to-moderate hearing loss), I am also familiar with the difficulties of people late-deafened (with mild-to moderate...

    Would you choose be hearing?

I said no. I won't list all the reasons, but one reason is it has made me realize who my true friends are. When I was struggling to be hard of hearing (hearing enough for other hearing) as long as I was keeping up, I could be part of the conversation, but as soon as it was difficult in any...

    Should I use subtitles?

Jazzberry, yes exactly. I'm not saying there aren't assertive hh people or there aren't things they are assertive about, but many (at least a lot more than there should be) are not assertive when it comes to being fully included in a conversation.

How can you communicate if 100%deaf

Ok everyone, try to calm down. Just look at me, I was born with hearing loss, but was ignorant of signing until college (a fact that bothers me, since otherwise I would have demanded it earlier). People can still come from sheltered lives and we need to realize that ASL and Deaf Culture, while...

    Where are you having Thanksgiving?

Leaving Virginia for Michigan tomorrow with my twin sister to visit parents and possibly see almost all my aunts, uncles, and cousins (only have an oldest brother and future sister-in-law in Texas, an older brother in California, and an aunt/uncle/cousin in Pennsylvania).

    Should I use subtitles?

Hannah louise, hello! I was like you, moderate to severe hearing loss and I wore HAs in both ears full time (my hearing declined in the last 8 months to severe to profound and the damaged nerve has become very sensitive, so amplified sounds are untolerable). When I was like you, I wasn't being...

dont know what to do with stupid comments

I have a brother who I was really worried about the two times that he was deployed to Iraq for months to a year, but I understand that that doesn't come close to comparing to the stress, worry, and sacrifice a military spouse and their deployed spouse goes through. I have such respect for your...

For those who suport NCLB..take a hard look at this cartoon

I was one that was hard of hearing from birth and later started becoming Deaf :deaf:. I hope all the d/Deaf/hh I meet here and in person will agree (in the sense of accepting me in the culture).

Does anyone else feel like their life was ruined by mainstream school

I think when hearing people sometimes say death, when they mean deaf, it is actually a very accurate assessment of hearing people's subconscious views on deafness. When your parents heard about your deafness, I think they started in the grieving process due to feeling a loss that their child...

Does anyone else feel like their life was ruined by mainstream school

I have always used the word mainstream with the follow definition. So they can go to public or private school. To be honest, I don't know what charter or at-risk are. Mainstream verb (used with object): to place (handicapped students) in regular school classes.

Ever been insulted for being deaf?

I definitely will if she tries anything like that again since I have "laid down the law". If I know that my rights are being violated, I am quick to fight for it with one exception. Unfortunately, it still a struggle for me to assert myself (as deaf) with hearing people regarding audism since...

Ever been insulted for being deaf?

:( That sort of thing disgusts me! I am relieved that hasn't happened to me yet. But with my hearing decreasing and other health issues popping up, I am worried someone my throw that "f" word (faking) out as an accusation. :eek3:

Ever been insulted for being deaf?

 Wow, that guy needs serious help and jail time if he tries to act on those sort of impulses! I would have been freaking out too trying to plan a safe escape (hopefully where he couldn't follow me). Glad you got out of that safe.
