    Curious About Cochlear Implants

It does help with Meniere's but that not the only reason to get a CI.

Smile with HA / CI ?

Like others have said, there are no feedback issues. A CI is a totally different beast than a HA. So, if you get a CI, smile away. As for your other questions... They have pretty much eliminated facial nerve issues. This is especially true for those related to surgery itself. Some...

Input Dynamic Range and Stimulation Rate

To be honest, I didn't look at those things very closely. At the time, I was just trying to get a handle on the fact that my hearing came to the point where I had no other option but get a CI. So, I essentially went on the recommendation of a very good audiologist and the general info provided...

    Just simple questions

Indeed! Shel90 - I refuse to let it go to my head. Everybody is different and some can do amazing things with a CI and others can't due to a variety of reasons.

Tips on building confidence on the phone with a CI

Ron, You have given excellent advice and suggestions to those who struggle with phone calls. There aren't many with a CI that are truly comfortable with using phones especially on a everyday basis. I didn't realize right at first that this was such an issue for others. I mean I was...

    Just simple questions

As rick48 already eloquently stated, CIs are neither good nor evil. The problem is some people in the world wish to "impose" their value system or worldview on others. This is an ancient problem that has plagued us down the centuries and it is no different today. I absolutely love what...

    Just simple questions

I agree but my point was there can be circumstances where the law can "force" the issue. That being said, it is not about the CI "per se" but about a custodial arraignment that happens to be dealing with a CI. That was the only reason I brought that up.

I have a few questions about if i'm going bilateral with CIs in the future...

Unfortunately, that depends on the person. Some do better with it than others. The real reason one should get a 2nd CI is that it really helps to understand speech in noisier environments. All the other stuff is trivial compared to that one.

    People are shouting at me

Glad to help! But don't go get a CI just for that! :D

    decisions

To answer your questions... 1) Strictly up to you as her parent. 2) Bilateral is the way to go but remember the cost factors. It is not a cheap endeavor. One is expensive enough and two makes it very expensive. 3) If there is no hearing to preserve, then go for the most stimulus all...

    Just simple questions

Nope, I don't believe for one bit that any gov't will force it citizens to get a CI. The main reason I say that is human nature. Why would a gov't spend the money for a small percentage of the population that may or may not benefit from a CI? It is much easier and cheaper for the gov't to...

    People are shouting at me

You can't have recruitment without the stimulus of sounds. It is different with tinnitus which can occur with or without noise. As a rule, having a CI generally eliminates recruitment. The reason pertains to the fact that the electrode stimulates a broad spectrum of frequencies in the...

I have a few questions about if i'm going bilateral with CIs in the future...

While I can't give you any personal experience since I have just one CI, I can relay what I have learned from others. Some insurance companies will allow bilaterals with little fanfare. Others will force you to go through a process to prove you need a 2nd CI. In those situations, you need...

    People are shouting at me

There are two different issues here... The first could be that people are actually shouting at you. The second could be that your HA is set too high for your comfort level. As for first, most hearing people are self conscious about shouting with others around if there really isn't a need...

Anyone able to enjoy music with their cochlear implant?

I'm sorry to hear about your troubles. I got my CI just over 5 yrs ago. I had a HA since 3 yrs old before that. My CI is great with music. I listen all the time. There were some differences I had to get used at first when listening with my CI compared to my HA days. It wasn't so...

    virtual channel

Interesting questions! The electrode is the device that is actually inserted into one's cochlea. A channel is a distinct point that can be stimulated by the electrode. Therefore by this definition, an electrode is a series of channels. A virtual channel is a discrete point that isn't...

    Between the following 3 cochlears...

To follow up on the music aspect of this thread... To reiterate, I have the Freedom and I listen to music all the time. I prefer the music "as is" not with the T-Coil/Mic. This is mainly I prefer the without any distortion that the T-Coil/Mic can give. I remember how music sounded in my HA...
