Wat is it like to b a deaf person in the hearing world?

It isn't the lonely, depressing world I believe it is sometimes depicted to be. Sometimes things prove to be complications, but well, they're just like having too small of a refrigerator or being too short to reach the top shelf at the grocery store.

    Question - Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing?

I have just called myself "deaf" as well, and sometimes I get a good laugh when strangers inquire and I just lay out straight: "I'm deaf". And they get apologetic and I just lol and they don't believe it because I can laugh with some sound. I don't know if I'm culturally deaf because I feel I am...

    need help writing a paper

Well, I believe I have an internal voice. A lot of deaf people can speak, too, including me(to a certain extent). And well, I don't know if this makes sense, but I don't think of deafness as just a "mute" and everything is just a closed-off silent. I think of it more like turning the volume so...

I'm deaf and it's okay because.....

I'm deaf and it's ok because I still have a mind. I can imagine sounds and accomplish all that I want to regardless of whether I can hear or not. I will admit it would make things easier if I could hear well but I am very grateful for the sounds I still can hear.

What Ticks You Off (Most) About Hearies?

I don't know if this was posted but it makes me feel silly when people wave a hand or something in front of me(I can still see!) and say stuff like "HELLLLLLLLLO. CAAAAAAN YOUUUU HEEEEAR MEEEE?". All I can hear is a sort of noise anyway, but it doesn't help when people exaggerate the...

How many of us are Musicians?

I voted yes, before and after. I play the piano just about everyday, and the violin at least once a week. Even though I can't truly hear all of it, I can feel it. Sometimes, when I feel like I am playing well, I imagine the sound.

    Did you know that...?

Did you know that "teacher" is an anagram of "cheater"?

    What did you learn today?

I looked that up when I saw this "Elephant Man' documentary. It about a man who has that disease and has about fifty pounds of tumor on him. It sounds impossible, but if you look it up, you can see him. The disease frightens me, and I hope they find a way to cure it soon.

Bear with me, a little rant. I won't do it often, I promise.

Oh yes, I feel you. Sometimes, it's hard to make people understand what they just don't want to believe. I guess they're trying to be positive, but the effect is mirroring. It is a good idea to start signing to her now. I can just imagine the people clapping. I used to have people yell at me and...

    Hi from Australia

Well, it's good to hear that you are not sad about it anymore. There is a great community here for deaf people and like many people we have regular lives. My best wishes to you and your son. I hope nobody will tease him about it and I hope he does not feel ashamed. Who cares who has a hearing...

    hi

Hi, I am from California, where everyone seems chatty but unfortunately I've always been rather resigned. I'm hoping to meet many new people. I'm trying to look at life from a new more optimistic point of view. I hope to improve on my ASL but it has always felt kind of weird when people look at...

Is speaking and listening hard work for hearing people?

I think they are half listening. I've always been told that in America, people talk more than usual before eating at a restaurant. I don't know really, but I like to get to the eating part. :P And you shouldn't feel silly for asking because I bet there are people with the same question that...
