    Interesting Trend in NY

Ahh, but here's the tricky thing. Notice they don't excuse someone for being DEAF, they excuse them for not speaking ENGLISH. It's the same thing with the EMT/Paramedic requirements in NYS; "cadidates [for the EMT program] must be able to communicate with the hospital via radio in English"...

    Interesting Trend in NY

I was reading the "Interpreter Denied by Court" thread and it reminded me of the new rules they have for jury duty in NYS. I appeared for jury duty a couple of weeks ago and sometime in the past 4 years (since I last had to go) they've made it so you're automatically disqualified if you don't...

    schools vs hoh student

Doesn't an FM system require the room(s) to be wired? Or is that an old style, or am I just confusing it with another accomodation?

    Observation by a hearing person...

I do the same thing when I'm at a function that happens to be interpreted. It is a good way to see how phrases and words get translated and to pick up new vocabulary. Interpretator - Would it be appropriate/polite to introduce yourself to the interpreter before the event or during a break...

How do you feel about Terps

Sorry, I guess I'm getting misunderstood again. I've already gotten an answer regarding terp salaries in my area, after much difficulty. Unfortunately, I discovered that it was not enough to do go into the field, despite the fact that it's one of the things I think I really love to do. I was...

How do you feel about Terps

Yeah, so? That's the same for almost ANY non-union or non-civil service job. And yet, most industries manage give ball park figures to the general public, even if those figures have a wide range. Come on, SOME info about terping salary is better than nothing.

How do you feel about Terps

Sure. But that's not different from any other job, and yet I can easily learn that a 'Senior Analyst' typically makes $70,000 or a 'Forest Ranger' position starts at $27,000. (Just making up numbers folks). At least the non-disclosure agreement makes some sense I suppose. BTW, I finally...

How do you feel about Terps

Any idea why terps are so secretive about the amount of money they make? They wouldn't refuse on a personal basis (I know some people don't like discussing how much they make), but as a whole, when our ASL classes would ask, they indicated they weren't supposed to discuss it. It really makes...

    what does PAH mean?

It's not too common here in upstate NY, but I do hear/use it from time to time. Now, I always thought the Deaf "pah" was the same as the Deaf "chah!" which we were told in our ASL class was used to emphasize something really huge. I learned something new too :)

Where would you expect to find ASL books in a bookstore?

For a while our local Borders bookstore was placing ASL books in the "Education" section with the Homeschooling, Special Ed, and Teaching Kids with Disabilities books.

The ASL Dictionary that finally sets the "standard" for all signs...

You know though, this type of info is EXACTLY what ASL dictionaries are missing. When I look up "sub", in an "American" English dictionary I get a list of all the regional variations, and there are even seperate entries for the variations. It's about time some one should step up and do...

    New Posts Button

Looks like it's something weird with Firefox and the new AD. Internet Exploder, goes to the new posts. IE has to redraw the screen 20 times, but it goes there.

    New Posts Button

Since AD changed/upgraed the "View New Posts" button near the thread title no longer works. It just takes me to the top of the thread. What happened? Anyone else having this problem?

    Percent vs dB?

The typical hearing test covers range of 0-110dB (sometimes as high as 120dB); it also covers a range of frequencies at those loudnesses. Given that the test is nearly on a 0-100 scale, and thus a percentage, it is almost the same as the -dB. But doing the math will get you the actual dB...

Double Standards ~ parenting style clashes

RainGurl, I think you are on the right track. Don't give in to them, hold them to the same standards you hold for your children when her's are in your house. It IS your house! Additionally, your children can also apply peer pressure to get them to help out. I'm sure your kids are already...

    Deaf Clubs

I was reading the "Immersion" and it's usually pointed out that Deaf Clubs are a good way to meet friends and be active in the Deaf community. When I went to a local Deaf Club everyone was very nice and friendly, but that was years ago and now I can't find them again (I've already googled for...

The Benefits of Captioning for Hearing People

Bingo! Because many TV shows are super loud during action scenes and quiet to normal at other times most people pick a happy medium volume level. But this means sometimes you miss what people are saying when they are talking quiet or whispering during the show. We also leave have CC on, on...

Stereotypes of the deaf and hard of hearing

Blame Hellen Keller. (Well, not her personally. Just her popularity) Nothing like having the American public remember a "deaf icon" that embodies the exception rather than the rule.

Sign Language in Computer and Technical Terms, Anyone?

Does anyone know of a dictionary (online or hard copy) that may have these signs? I'm a computer and network technician and I work at a school that mainstreams nearly all of the Deaf kids in our area. It'd be great to add these signs to my vocabulary.
