    A Parent's joy versus animal's torment.

Most people do, but minority language cultures thrive. My family taught me German while I was growing up. Not because it has practical applications, but because it was used in the house and its part of my heritage, my family's culture. Deaf culture can survive the elimination of deafness...

Why teach your child a Native American tongue if you can teach them English?

    unknow sign language

Native signers don't think in English. ASL natives with ESL might flip flop, but you think in one language then the other or mash them up a bit. The closest thing for an English native new to sign to help understand that is if you've ever taken a foreign language then thought in that language...

This is the very reason that pro-ASL arguments should be the focus. There's good research that shows that ASL for deaf/hoh kids improves their quality of life and their scholastic ability in HS and College. There are strong pro-ASL arguments as an addition to CI/HA/etc because those technologies...

Need? So what if they reduce the need for ASL? Is there a need for Icelandic, Sami, any of the Native American language? Is there a need for any language beyond a few wide spread ones? They're also not trying to reduce the need for ASL, they're trying to reduce the incidence of deafness (the...

Because of the medical paradigm. Skin color doesn't have that aspect. Why? because of the medical paradigm. The fact is, there is a medical paradigm. And the fact that Deaf culture can co-exist with CI invalidates this whole line of argument. CI was developed to solve a medical problem. Not to...

I've noticed you can be a bit blunt, I kind of like it though. Blunt just means you're open to share a truthful opinion. It feels more honest to me, than walking on eggshells or something to save someone's feelings in the moment.

Nah, actually I was swayed in the course of this thread. I made up my mind about adult implants a long time ago, but for kids I was unsure. Now I'm quite a bit more sure that kids can be implanted if parents wish it, and we should be ok with that. But at the same time I'm convinced that deaf...

    A Parent's joy versus animal's torment.

I think that comparison was designed to stir emotion, and make someone react. Probably with the goal of making them realize that Deaf culture is a culture, and that we wouldn't typically use technology to make some minority culture be like mainstream. But the immediate problem with the...

It's really not a problem. I just thought I should correct to make it clear in case others picked up on it.

    Nic....

:) I loved your post about the surgery and I am a huge fan of how you approached it too. Brilliant in my opinion. I like how much first hand experience people share here, it really provides extra perspectives and makes everything feel less... foreign (I can't come up with a better word).

I've looked them up and put them on my list. I don't have as much time to read books as I'd like right now though, but I will get to them. The Harlan book, based on reviews, seems negative and maybe a bit extreme at times. Some people even went as far to call him nuts and dangerous. But also...

At the core, it is the primary thing I'm arguing for. Secondary thing is arguing for you to use the push for ASL as a replacement to the push against CI; to take a more positive approach and (I think) achieve greater results. As a very small sample, look at the comments that came in this thread...

Haha, well that's a bit fitting too, I work with computers for a living. It's just because my name is Nick though

Ah, well that clears it up. I knew this thread was dangerous. Lots of touchy topics. I'm a bit surprised it lasted as long as it did.

Thanks BleedingPurist. I'm not a parent and actually don't intend to be. Also a he, not a she. I'd have taken Nick as my username but it was taken, somehow Nic wasn't so I went for it. It's a bit androgynous so easy mistake, definitely no worries :)

I disregard history across the board when history holds back progression. I live here and now, and here and now this is what can help. The difference in our approaches is generational. My approach might alienate the old, your approach probably alienates the new. Which group is the future of the...

    Karma stories

Then how if good action is to be done without expectation could good action result in finding a $10 bill later that same day? I think the concept of Karma is a means to encourage people to live good lives now. Inundate young people with this concept that doing bad will always result in a...

    Karma stories

Nah, the problem is I don't believe Karma is a real thing. I've given up a bus seat plenty of times. I'm fit, I can stand for the 30 minutes it takes to get wherever I'm going. Older folks don't always have that luxury and having a seat can help them out a lot. What happens after I gave up my...
