Inventions we like to see developed

Ya I figured that's what that app would be like. I signed up for the Transcense beta, hopefully I'll get in. I'm super curious to see if it'll be better, it's a different type of system so it has potential, I think.

Inventions we like to see developed

I think we'd all agree that if everyone was fluent in sign it would be superior. But for folks who are (also) part of the hearing community they're going to have to interact with non-signers regularly. Having some tech to support those kind of interactions would be great. I agree that meaning...

Inventions we like to see developed

There are apps that do this, though I don't know how well. This one is currently available, but my hunch is it just uses standard voice to text, so it'll probably be shoddy: http://www.livecaptionapp.com/ And this one is new, currently in beta, and looks more promising since it handles...

    Languages

I've counted them when people ask this question, then they ask me to name them... C++, C#, Java, PHP, ... they don't think it's as funny as I do. I'm a native in English, conversational in German (understand more than I'm typically willing to speak), and learning ASL.

The Silencing of the Deaf [article]

https://medium.com/matter/the-silencing-of-the-deaf-22979c8ec9d6 This is an older article, but I searched the forums and didn't find a post about it. Apologies if this is a re-post. It's also long, but I think worth reading through the whole thing. Hoichi got me thinking about CI and early age...

    Hey to you all

Ya, I think age has a lot to do with it. The younger you are when you're exposed to Deaf culture, the more likely to are to embrace it and want to be part of it and identify as Deaf. I think I was mostly talking about late-deafened rather than born or early HOH. I think losing your hearing...

Sheriff's deputy shackled elementary school students who had disabilities

For older kids with disabilities, this gets scarier. In a past life I worked at a grocery store and we employed a bunch special ed kids who were highschool age and older. There was a partnership with a local intermediate school; it helped these kids a lot to get work experience in the public...

Sheriff's deputy shackled elementary school students who had disabilities

That's probably true. Leave them alone to go crazy and people would complain. Hold them down people would complain. Put them in timeout, probably still complainers, then that might not always be possible. Not sure if there is a good move. Maybe call parents and see what they will approve?

Sheriff's deputy shackled elementary school students who had disabilities

Ya but an SRO isn't there to punish kids... So why was he called in to do that? It's not like a 52lb 8 year old is a real threat to anyone.

    It's Official

Yuck, what a mess! At least it's all working itself out now. Sucks about the extra charges (ins, payment etc) that you have to eat. But at least you were able to wrap it all up and don't have to sit on the house for however long it would have taken to find a new buyer. I hate that whole...

    Hey to you all

That's an interesting thought Joshie, that you consider HOH to be Deaf. I like to think HOH can be considered Deaf once they seek out and embrace the Deaf community, Deaf culture, and start to learn ASL; but prior to that, probably not so much. A lot of HOH folks just don't want to identify as...

    Hi I'M Sebastian

Hi Sebastian. Generally folks make introduction posts in the introduce yourself forum. It's also a good idea to give a bit of background about yourself, so folks know a bit about you.

Sheriff's deputy shackled elementary school students who had disabilities

The biggest question I have is why the school called a police officer to deal with it instead of the parents, or just leveraged staff on hand... I mean a 52lb kid isn't going to exactly be a problem for any full grown adult. There's no way that squirt was a real threat to anyone there, but...

Sheriff's deputy shackled elementary school students who had disabilities

I saw this on the news this morning, totally heartbreaking. How can anyone think treating a kid like that will improve their behavior?

    Deaf, hearing relationships

That doesn't sound elitist to me, if anything is sounds... comfortable. Honestly, I think even going deaf doesn't let a HOH or late-deafened person fully understand what it's like to be born-d/Deaf. We learned English first, we could hear while we learned English, we can typically speak as well...

Canada’s Adorable Hitchhiking Robot Was Attacked In Philadelphia And It’s A National

Oh oh, I see, you were comparing Jaws to Terminator not because Jaws was a robot and it made people scared of robots, but because Jaws did scare people into fearing the ocean (duh on me). Most people seem to respond well to robots though, look how many people picked up Hitchbot and gave him a...

Canada’s Adorable Hitchhiking Robot Was Attacked In Philadelphia And It’s A National

It made it all the way across Canada and saw some of the US before meeting its demise. I wouldn't say it's robot distrust that ended its life, probably just some thieves who saw free hardware. Kind of like how hitchhikers end up with missing kidneys sometimes... Wait... Jaws was a shark not a...
