    Michigan anyone?

I heard the phrase "trolls" more from the yuppers, as in "Wonder how many trolls we'll get up here during leaf-peeping season." Pretty rare that the phrase was ever used in the L.P. though. I grew up a troll below the bridge myself, but had yupper relatives up in the Keewanau, so had roots...

    Michigan anyone?

So, you a troll or a yupper? Know what Vernor's is? Half the family doesn't speak to the other half the week of the UM vs. MSU game? Had experience with lake-effect snow? If all the above makes sense to you, then yay for the great state of Michigan!

    JFK and Mimi Alford

A couple.of excerps, and I saw the full interview with Meredith Viera. Have you read the book yet?

    JFK and Mimi Alford

Lots of women have "good memories" of men who abused and yes, raped them. When "date rape" happens, women sometimes (often?) are reluctant to prosecute, as they don't know if they will be believed, or think that maybe they shared some responsibility, or think that if they didn't fight the guy...

    What's your dinner tonight?

I did another crock-pot dinner: chicken, a Granny Smith apple, 2 sweet potatoes, onions, and maple syrup with Dijon mustard. Pretty good, but my *slow* cooker seems to cook fast. The sweet potatoes and especially the apples came out more mushy than I wanted. Tasted good, though.

What is better way to censor spoilers? (Request)

televisionwithoutpity.com uses black bars for spoilers. You can click on the bar and it disappears so you can read what's underneath. Or leave it alone if you want to be "unspoiled."

7-year-old fights off suspected Walmart kidnap

Good for her! She's a brave little girl, and did just the right thing. I wonder if she has been taught to stick up for herself generally.

    JFK and Mimi Alford

I was going to say, he did not.die of old age! Have you ever heard the old Tom Lehrer comedy bit where he is talking about what he has done in life, and says "It is humbling to realize that when Mozart was my age...he had been dead for three years."

Court decides seniors can't reject Medicare

It depends on your age. If you apply for Soc. Sec. at age 62, and then continue to work, your Soc.Sec. benefits will be reduced. After age 66, however, you can work as much as you want and it will not reduce your Soc. Sec. benefits. Interest, dividend, or capital gains income has nothing to do...

    JFK and Mimi Alford

She wasn't the president. Her affairs just didn't have the same consequence. Far as I know, she never had an affair with a young male intern. Hers were with adults (remember at the time of the Kennedy-Alford affair, age of adulthood was 21). Jackie O tapes to reveal her and JFK's affairs...

    JFK and Mimi Alford

Worse still for women: no birth control! Probably the single most life-saving concept invented, be it condoms, diaphragms, the b.c. pill, whatever. Walk through any graveyard with tombstones from before 1900, and you will see a stunningly large number of graves of young women who died in...

    JFK and Mimi Alford

So you won't be buying the book, then? I will definitely be watching NBC's interview with her tonight. I think it's interesting to see how social commentary has changed. Back in the 60's, if a girl had sex with an older man, she was assumed to be the "slut" and "the homewrecker" and...

    JFK and Mimi Alford

You know I go to the Kennedy Center a lot for different programs. We have season tickets for ballet. And I stop in the gift shop every so often. Right now they are selling a line of jewelry that is good-quality replicas of pieces that JFK gave to Jackie. And my first thought was "Ick...who...

    JFK and Mimi Alford

The only surprising thing is that Mimi Alford has decided to write a book about it now. I guess it's something she wanted to have known, in the twilight of her own life, that she once had an affair with "the Camelot President." It used to be that women would keep quiet out of shame and/or...

What If All the Cats in the World Suddenly Died?

I wish one of the uses for a dead cat were to point out to the cat's owner, "Look, bozo, this is what happens to your dearly beloved pet when you let it roam around all night!!" Sadly, even a dead cat doesn't seem to get the point across. I would be heart-broken with grief if one of my dogs...

Court decides seniors can't reject Medicare

Well, yes. That's the point that Reba is making, that it is ridiculous. Everyone who works pays into Social Security. Even rich people. So even rich people are entitled to their benefits when they reach the appropriate age. You can postpone receiving benefits until age 70, if you want...

What If All the Cats in the World Suddenly Died?

True enough. My neighbors have lost at least one cat to a fox or coyote that lives in the ravines around our subdivision. They found the cat's mangled body near the woods. But they still think it's a good idea to give their remaining cats the "freedom" to roam. Bloody idiots. (Other...

Court decides seniors can't reject Medicare

Isn't that ridiculous. The whole concept of being forced to pay for an insurance program you don't want, and getting worse coverage because of it, just makes no sense to me.
