Id like to learn more about CIs, have some ?s

Umm I listen to all kind of music, and even bass music (you'll really have to give me an example of a song that has bass sounds 250Hz and below then I'll be able to report to you whether I can hear it or not). There is a reason why there may be a loss in the bass sounds...the array can...

    curious regarding implant and hearing

Same with me, I could go on and on...but... When I was first activated, I could tell that the map was a little too strong as I could hear my cat poop. I hear her scratch the litter, then *plop*, then scratch the litter..so yeah...that was across the room. Since then, it is a little more quieter...

Can hearing aids "gain" aided hearing down to 0db?

I agree. I could hear people talking and hearing their voice, but there was no clarity (esp in the highs). If someone was behind me and was talking, i could hear them talking and know who it is, but I cannot understand it, with exceptions of a few words that has been said many times.

How bad must your own hearing be before you consider CI?

To be honest - I don't think the fact that you didn't have it at 5 years old, made any difference. I had both of mine done when I was 29...that's YEARS later after 5. :-) It *all* comes down to training. For you - it's not too late. It may take a little longer, but if you listen to a...

How bad must your own hearing be before you consider CI?

They only do that because surgeons/audiologists want to "save" the other ear in case if something has happened. Either CI doesn't work (not mechanical failure), or to save the other ear for better technology (in fact, Cochlear has pretty much the same technology for 20 years, improving on small...

    my implant-not wearing it much

SOrry Off-topic - Imitrex did help me for a while, but it takes about 2 hours before it is effective...that's almost the same amount of time if I take 3 Advil. I've tried Zomig - works within 20 minutes or so and kills it. However...it's $75 a PILL...my insurance won't cover it. No matter. I...

    my implant-not wearing it much

OH I totally SECOND that!! :-) God, if I had permanent CI's, that will drive me absolutely batty! We both are in the exact same boat. I still get occasional migraine, but it has reduced since I had my CI's. Glad to hear your migraines are in a bit of control. What do you do when you...

100db gain HA's, is this ever going to be possible?

Hmm - One thing that you have to realize that HA only amplifies sound. How can it amplifies sound? By utilizing the residual hearing you have. If you have NO nerve cells, it won't work, no matter how powerful it is. The Naidas sound wonderful, but it will only help me with environmental...

How bad must your own hearing be before you consider CI?

Here's my little rant...hopefully. First - I have residual hearing, and I *was* able to hear pretty well with my hearing aids, but then it progressively got worse. I'm one of those that cannot live without sounds. Hearing aids can only amplify so much...regardless, I would have never been able...

If a CI person has an heart attack....

I don't think the defrib will affect it much because it gives a shock to the heart only and the chest is far away from the head. There has got to be some people with pacemakers, rods in their legs/arms etc that has been exposed to Defib stuff.

    Questions for the CI surgeon...

Nevermind. I had a couple things to say, but this thread is not about waiting. It's about what questions to ask. So I withdraw my statements.

    Questions for the CI surgeon...

Exactly. If it comes with a headband of some sort where you have to "plug yourself" at night..there's no way in hell I'm gonna do that. I move around too much, I change places when I sleep and I sleep in different rooms at times. So no. Plus, for implantable CI that has battery powered...

    Questions for the CI surgeon...

I actually didn't ask anything because I read up everything about it online and I really didn't have much to say. I had surgery the week after I saw the surgeon (she worked quick!). Anything that has to do with surgery/medications/medical stuff can be put on hold until you see the surgeon...

    Opinions needed on CI Brands

I have tried using the HA in my other ear, but my HA at the time of activation was more powerful than my implanted ear, so it wouldn't work. To be honest, as much as you may hate the sounds at activation, it will get better over time. As for doing both at the same time - Vallee is the only...

    Well this sucks

I am going to assume that you never had BTE's - your ears aren't used to it. After a while, your ears will start to "mold" itself around the aid. I was used to smaller HA's, and now I got the big fat Freedom..that took a while for me to get used to because it's so thick.

    High Frequency Sensitivity?

I've listened to several YouTube videos of people playing bagpipes (who wants to tape a funeral?!). Yes, the bagpipes really have a lot of high frequencies. There are low's, but majority high frequency.

    Fip -

Thank you everyone! My grieving period has been over for weeks now. I seem to recover a lot faster because I'm used to seeing animals being put to sleep (used to be a vet tech). I still have a lot of love for all cats. :-) If I had the money and the space, I would get 30 cats, and they ALL...

    Opinions needed on CI Brands

http://www.alldeaf.com/hearing-aids-cochlear-implants/61464-ci-selection.html a link that also may help in CI selection...keep in mind that one is really not "BETTER" over the other. I think it is more of personal preference.

Fozzy - actually Cochlear has 22 electrodes, not 122 (eeps!). even though Freedom do not have the T-Mic that sits like AB, this is the reason why they have three microphones. There's two directional, and one omni. I made a large list of comparisons a few months ago, let me see if I...
