thanks I'm part of a medieval re-enactment group and I wondered about that, too, how to sign that word. :)

    Offensive??

Sometimes hearing English speakers need a correction The grammarian in the writer in me couldn't resist this one... They should say: "I'm sorry, I didn't know that you are deaf," which is more accurate than saying, "Oh, I'm sorry," because that sounds like they pity you for being deaf...

    Offensive??

yep made sense You made good points. This is an interesting discussion. My hubby has a "handicapped" placard and wheelchair symbol in his license plate, and some jerk came up to him and pounded on his window after he parked and demanded why he parked there because he didn't "look...

    Offensive??

:) Excellent point--I wholeheartedly agree with you. My husband is a "disabled" Army Vet, and he would also agree with what you are saying about not being impaired as a whole person. :)

    Offensive??

lol My mom always taught me to try the other's shoes on and walk in them before I make judgments. My signing is slow and so yeah, I'm "signing impaired"--hahaha... but still trying. :) It just takes it longer to "sink in" though I am NOT stupid. I didn't take offense--I can see the Deaf...

    Offensive??

thanks Thank you--that was very insightful. :) I know it is an old term, one I heard only a few times.

    Offensive??

that's what I was getting at Since legal jargon is considered "politically correct", most hearing people don't think about it because it's supposed to be ok or polite in hearing culture to say that. If they haven't been exposed to a class on Deaf Culture or haven't had contact with ASL or...

    Fiction and sign language

oh silly me... Yeah, you ARE right... usually it is used to show MENTAL thought... :) That's why I'm in rough draft stage!! If the word was Spanish, or a sentence, it would be italic in a book... Como se llama? (What is your name?) (I can't make the double question mark... sorry...)

    Fiction and sign language

deaf character That's why my story is set in a mainstream school, it's something I had experience with as a hearing girl attending with deaf kids. I plan to have my deaf friends read it and give me feedback. :) I use italics and ACTION tags during the signing parts of dialogue. Lots...

    Vegetarian

almost there No chicken, no beef, no pork... Egg and dairy (organinc or cage free eggs). I am the only veg in my family and I get ridiculed for it by some. I had to do a lot of diet research to defend myself from the ignorant remarks. My dad and older half sister were the worst of the...

    Movie theater prices.

open caption I went to a small theater in Portland, OR in the 1990's that showed a Tom Cruise film with open captions. I have read there is some new technology for screens or something that show captions, but maybe it is still in development? I have a hard time hearing mumbling or...

    Deaf Culture in general

deaf mailman My deaf mail man would take time to sign with me when he brought the mail to my mom's house. He was very nice. :)

    Offensive??

Deaf Culture Class They talked about this in the Deaf Culture class I took in the 1990's. I am hearing and I think of this term as hearing legal jargon phrase. It is considered offensive to say this in Deaf Culture (general rule). My friends prefer deaf. Some like HOH. Just ask them...
