    Obsession on deafness or disability?

Wow, I sure hope other late deaf (like me) aren't blathering on about how Deaf people should raise their kids, run their lives, etc.... I hate that because it just makes a bad name for us other late deaf that DO respect Deaf culture. We know we can't be a part of it, not growing up Deaf and...

    Annoying ignorant hearing people stories

Again, someone asked me how I drive without my HAs on. Sigh. I am the BEST driver. Eyes on the back of my head!

    First concert since losing hearing!

Funny, maybe I am odd but I don't do music at all. What I hear sounds like annoying noise so I just skip it. Too bad because lot of my friends love it. Maybe if there was lots of bass (to dance to!) I might enjoy?

    How to behave

Trying to learn. Trying to change. Been HH whole life but now that I can sign better (not fluent - only decent) strongly considering to change teams. :-) More comfortable for me (ASL). Husband hearing but decent signer. It works for us. Without HAs happy and comfortable but can't...

What do you do when hearing family comes over?

Ha, that is how I became a really good cook. I figure if I have something to do -- create amazing things in the kitchen --- I can amuse myself without having to come down with typhoid for the afternoon. I cook, they let me be. That's my solution at this point. Not all bad, but we are all...

What do you do when hearing family comes over?

Very thoughtful reply. Good point! Always hoh but late deaf and learning the ropes as it were. For now I will try, with residual hearing and lip reading. My husband mostly does like you, signs if he can and I can at least get the topic. That helps. I don't want to either exclude them or...

    Nice to meet you

I joke that I am like the roomba, you know that little automatic vac? It just wanders around and washes up. That's the easiest thing for me to do just keep busy like that. Otherwise just sit and watch. I find it better when they know I am in my own world.

Do you feel sorry for any hearing loss

Feel sorry? no. A little awkward sometimes - fitting in neither world today, sure. I used to wish I could hear the same as hearing people but don't anymore (bc I can't). Now, I work hard to be a good user of ASL and to fit respectfully into the only world I can hope to fit into. I always...

    Nice to meet you

@BrittBritt, thx, pretty much the same here. I am thinking stopping the smiling and nodding though, it's too much work and it makes them think I know what's going on. I won't be mean or anything but I will stop using a look on my face that makes them *think* I am understanding.

What do you do when hearing family comes over?

For sure. I love them and they love me. I just love them MORE when it's one on one :-) in giant "clumps" it's kinda unworkable isn't it? It's mostly my husband family. They are fabulous. They just don't always know how to deal with me when they are all caught up in a rip-roaring...

What do you do when hearing family comes over?

I have a BIG family. Typical to have 20+ here for dinner. When my hearing family/friends come over, or I visit with them wherever, I find that I just sit and wait for it to be over. My husband tries to terp for me but he's not yet good enough to keep up (so we give up). For the most part...
