    Communication

I have lived among other cultures my whole life where there are many different languages spoken (and now been introduced to a few signed languages too). Many people are multi-lingual. What baffles me is, the majority of those who rely solely on English alone tend to be unable to communicate in...

    Communication

Smithtr is saying that it is important to have quality communication that results in clear understanding, especially when there is a need for confidential communication with a doctor or specialist. Although he is the most comfortable using ASL, he tries his best to improve in English so he can...

    Does anyone like to Crochet??

I love to crochet, but haven't done it to patterns much. Made a King-size blanket for my daughter and son-in-law as a wedding present, all in single stitch with multi-shaded wool/yarn. Simple, no fancy stitching there.

    Do you like spicy food?

Our family love hot spicy food. The hotter the better. Habenero chillies are usually rated on a scale of 1-10 as a 10. My husband's cooking rates at a 15 I reckon. When he cooks his chilli paste it fills the whole house with chilli fumes which gets everyone coughing and sneezing. But oh it...

    Deaf Equality

Not to worry Foxrac, People don't need to be an English scholar to communicate even in written form to the everyday person you may meet on the street. I believe when public awareness increases they, the public, will realize that communicating with a Deaf person in even basic of sign is mainly...

    Deaf Equality

I guess the main point I would like to make here is that the Deaf Community needs to be made more visible to the public (especially in Australia) if we are ever to have true equality and acceptance. The public cannot be educated unless they can see it in front of them.

    Deaf Equality

Wirelessly posted Yes we do (see my second post) but public tv broadcasting of sign language is limited to mostly to emergency crisis announcements. I would like to see a greater public acceptance and recognition of sign language ie : Auslan.

    Deaf Equality

Deaf Equality is the Theme of the WFD Conference this year. What equality issues would you prioritise on if given the choice? What would you put as Number 1 on your list? Mine is: Here in Australia, I want to see Auslan widely accepted to the point of having Auslan interpretation not only...

    Annoying ignorant hearing people stories

Wirelessly posted What irks me is when hearing people try to educate other hearing people about sign language when they dont know sign save a handful that are just common sense. Yet you are standing right there using sign language yet its as if you are invisible even though you were having a...

    Ambiguity in aspects of Identity

Being someone who was born severely-deaf in an all-hearing environment and raised oral I guess you can say I can understand the mindset of Hearing people. Hearing see me as hard-of-hearing because I can hear loud noise but not speech. Their concept of deaf is stone-deaf (cannot hear anything...
