I never meant for this to be a "bashing, belittling thread" Perhaps you would rather it be deleted?

I am feeling very discouraged lately

:topic: I'm doing the same thing! I'm working on my BA degree in special ed and learning asl at the same time. It can be beneficial in the special ed field because there are many special needs kids (hearing and deaf/hoh) with limited communication, who sign more than speak. and lilraysofhope...

How Does the Real World View the Profoundly Deaf?

Unfortunately many ignorant pople in this world will treat profoundly deaf individuals like they are less than human. That could be a reason why parents want their children to be oral as well. Also, a lot of hearing people don't want to hire profoundly deaf people because they feel like it would...

Deaf children and hearing parents...why don't the parents learn sl?

I feel like I've said this so many times... When you hav a child life isn't about you anymore, its about what is best for your child and family in general. That doesn't just include deafness, it includes families with children who have disabilities (mental retardation, down's syndrome...

Deaf children and hearing parents...why don't the parents learn sl?

I'm sorry, but in my opinion telling someone "I guess he's ok in your book because he was anti-oral" is making a huge generalized statement by assuming that just because some idiot said that that all anti-oral people would agree with him.

Deaf children and hearing parents...why don't the parents learn sl?

Posted by loml: Holly - I am familiar with Signed English. As you may be aware Signed English is not a language. As there is not a sign for every word in English, then you may inadvertently simplify your spoken vocabulary as a means of making up for the short comings of the sign system. _____...

Deaf children and hearing parents...why don't the parents learn sl?

Holly - Incorporating sign with oral training? Not sure what you are really trying to say here. You are using two differnt language and two different modes, so.........?? _____ I think what I meant is called signed english, each spoken word has a specific visual representation (its like ASL...

    Need Your Help Soon!

As a soon to be certified lifeguard...:) Lifeguarding is entirely visual. The signs of a drowning victim do not include screaming (if your underwater or thrashing around in it you aren't likely to get many sounds in). Lifeguards are trained to "look" for victims, not "hear" them. In fact, it...

Deaf children and hearing parents...why don't the parents learn sl?

:gpost: parents of deaf children need to read this and realize that deaf people are the best source of information on how to raise your deaf children.

Deaf children and hearing parents...why don't the parents learn sl?

Holly - Do you seriously think that sign language in a hearing family, is fool proof? _____ Isn't it better than watching someone's mouth move and never being sure if you caught everything they said? _____ Holly -I do not doubt that this has been the experience for some strictly oral...

Deaf children and hearing parents...why don't the parents learn sl?

yes I am. While I don't know a ton about it, I know it can be used in conjuntion with many other communication methods (including signed). I know it also helps with literacy. Sorry, it may have appeared that I was disagreeing with your post, but actually I was just posting my own response.

Deaf children and hearing parents...why don't the parents learn sl?

I just can't imagine going through life not having at least one form of solid fool proof communication with my family. So much conversation and information is missed by the deaf person who is oral. At least sign language could be used as a sort of universal language between family members. If...

What you experienced was an extreme opposite. You are right, he was a moron for saying that your daughter was limited. But there is no need to make a general assumption for all "anti-oral" people based on him, please don't generalize.

i was not made aware that his daughter knew 3 languages, please don't accuse me of being insensitive when it is really just a lack of knowledge. I don't have time to read up on everyone's blogs before I post a response.

Deaf children and hearing parents...why don't the parents learn sl?

Many deaf people can "hear", tons of deaf people within a community can hear also. But many of them know sign, and prefer it. I never said your daughter woudn't want to relate to other deaf people who can hear. In fact I said quite the opposite. I said that deaf people (able to hear or not), and...

    Some poems of mine...

These are just some poems I've written. Some of them are older, some of them I've written recently. I'd like to get your feedback on them! I know there are a lot of them, you don't have to read all of them if you don't want:) Her Great Mind She is just a child, just a sweet little...

Deaf children and hearing parents...why don't the parents learn sl?

Holly - If a community is not accepting of individuals, regardless of their differences, then one must question the values of that community. _____ Yes, but that is one specific community, the world is filled with all kinds of communities (including deaf ones) where a person could be...

Deaf children and hearing parents...why don't the parents learn sl?

agreed, but what do you do when the child wants to be accepted by a deaf community but isn't because they don't know sign? Isn't it best that parent's do what it takes to help their child fit into both? I mean psychologically speaking, being shunned by people you relate to most because you are...
