    "In-between"

NOT always, DD. That's what you are missing here. The girl I know of is NOT completely voice off, but she isn't always exclusively in the hearing world, either. She has the best of BOTH. She was raised with ASL and English. She is fluent in both and uses both when the need arises. Her...

    "In-between"

I may not be, but, I will tell you something, Sweetie. I have seen children with PROFOUND losses do well in the mainstream environment. I'm also NOT saying all do. That would be making a sweeping statement, which I will not make. However, I have seen children do well academically AND...

No. Actually, a few of them can't be civil. But, that's OK. I know what I believe in and stand for.

It matters a LOT. Studies and what not are great, but things evolve and change over time. You need to see things in real life on and ongoing and current basis to see . Just because SOME kids don't do well in the mainstream or most kids didn't do well in the mainstream 20-30 yrs ago, doesn't...

    "In-between"

No, Dear. Where it REALLY counts.... IN REAL LIFE. As for academics, it matters! If you can't get a decent education, you can't get a JOB. That goes for any student, D/hh OR NOT. Sounds like you don't give a crap if a kid is prepared for the real world or not. Low wage jobs don't cut it...

DD often spouts opinions from crap she reads off the internet + her own experience.

    "In-between"

You sure about that? I have YET to see you even suggest mainstreaming might work for a D/hh child. You're ALL about deaf school placements, which is fine for those kids who might benefit. However, there are those students WHO would do well in an oral only environment. I've seen such a...

Coke Overdose? Mom Drops After Drinking 10 Liters of Coca-Cola a Day

Sounds like this poor woman died from an electrolyte imbalance amongst other things. It also definitely sounds like she had an addiction, which makes this doubly tragic. I agree to someone's comment above about warning labels on coke. Do we really want to go there? The company should NOT...

So, a residential school is THE answer? :ugh:

Mom of a Teen who needs some answers...

And, my point was that so do other kids in the mainstream. I did also, actually. But, at which point do people move on from the their crappy experiences instead of reliving them over and over again like I've seen on this forum? It kind of paints certain deaf people as being bitter and with a...

Mom of a Teen who needs some answers...

Kids can be mean to other kids in all sorts of situations. If a kid is too short, too tall, has a weight problem, ect. Do you want to segregate those kids, too? Mainstreaming isn't the best option for every deaf child, but it should be an option. Like it or not, Shel, parents have the right...

    Using Naughty Language

That was no empty threat when I was a child. As an eight year old, I had my mouth washed out with soap for speaking profanity within ear shot of my mother.

    14 HIV/AIDS Beliefs--Which Ones Are True?

I, too, have to question this statement. First of all, you are aware of the state of mental health coverage in this country? By and large, the severely mentally ill are NOT subjected to long term commitments unless they commit a crime and are deemed criminally insane. Implausible in the case...

Is it really so bad to know SEE (Sign Exact English?)

Oh? Because she said that somewhere a few years ago; probably before you came on the forum. She used SEE with her hearing spouse "because it was easier for him".

Is it really so bad to know SEE (Sign Exact English?)

Don't you sign SEE with your hearing husband and ASL with ASL others? Same thing.

Is it really so bad to know SEE (Sign Exact English?)

What a bizarre response considering I don't know you, and, I had things going on in my personal life that kept me offline for weeks/months at a time. :eek3:

Is it really so bad to know SEE (Sign Exact English?)

Really? You are aware that speech therapy is employed by the hearing as well? Two examples would be stroke survivors and hearing children with speech difficulties, so I really think the above statement implies that STs are preying upon the deaf, and, that simply isn't true.

Is more speech therapy worth it?

Is it possible that you are discounting that a cochlear implant may just level the field making speech therapy easier than it was for the deaf, say, 25 yrs ago? I honestly think that is what is happening here. Just a thought... :hmm:
