I read this yesterday! I meant to post it here but I forgot. Whoops.

Medical professional learning asl for my patients

Ahhhh I totally get it now. This is one of the major weaknesses of VRI and an actual interpreter in person would have given your patient equal access. I applaud you for understanding and taking the time to learn ASL! Also THANK YOU for this: "People shouldn't have to deal with not being able...

Why didn't they bring the VRI interpreter with them in the room? Thanks for learning ASL!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Correlation_does_not_imply_causation Perhaps it might be of some assistance if you did some light reading on this subject.

We are in luck then! It just so happens that I have a doctoral research degree in medicine. I have published 4 research papers based on my original human subjects research. I am, in fact, a research scientist. The authors of this study are drawing conclusions based on correlational data when...

Not at all. I am saying: The "results" and discussion of this study are also conjecture. The data may be correct but the conclusions drawn from the data are conjecture. That's why the study is problematic. Maybe my English was not clear. Perhaps this is better: The "results" and discussion of...

Yes it was conjecture. It was actually intentionally conjecture. The "results" and discussion of this study are also conjecture. The data may be correct but the conclusions drawn from the data are conjecture. That's why the study is problematic.

This is why I said: MAYBE I said maybe because those first two "maybe's" at the top isn't based on any information in the study, and is just speculation to answer ToD's question. So yes, the first two "maybe's" were conjecture. However it is not "complete conjecture" to state this: The study...

Has anyone read this new study?

Maybe because their audiologists or teacher's of the deaf strongly discouraged it. Maybe because our hearing society devalues signed language over spoken language. Or maybe, like the study suggests: "presumably because their child’s listening and spoken language skills continued to develop."...

In fact the study even states this outright (bolding added): "The design of this study does not allow us to determine causality among variables but rather to explore the influence of variables on communication outcomes in young adolescents."

Same deal. CORRELATION DOES NOT EQUAL CAUSATION. Of course kids who have lower levels of speech perception, speech intelligibility, language and literacy are more likely to use sign language. This does not mean sign language CAUSED the delays. In fact it's just as likely to be the opposite and...

She most likely does make money from her research. Researchers, especially tenured ones, typically receive grants in order to conduct research.

Correlation does not equal causation! This data from this study, depending on the author's particular interest, could be interpreted in the exact opposite way that it is being interpreted by the authors. Like this: Kids who did poorer on various oral scores X benefited more from signing...

    Confused & angry

Was non-slurred speech an essential job requirement? Do you have proof? If you do, you should file a complaint with the EEOC or your state EEOC branch. I have helped people through several EEOC claims and have read basically everything on the EEOC website including all of the discrimination...

Well, look, the Daily Moth is discussing this article https://www.*********.com/single-post/2017/06/28/The-Daily-Moth-6-28-17 ...And a neuroscientist and other researchers are coming to much the same conclusions I did...

    Hi

Sup! I'm Deaf too - I don't have a CI yet but am getting one at the end of August. Nice to meet you ^.^

I wouldn't say I have 50 (I was being more general) , but I still stand by my statement about correlation vs causation. It's unfortunate that as a Teacher of the Deaf you've never seen a study that compared signers to non-signers. Shouldn't your teaching methods be based on methodology that...

Has anyone read this new study?

This study does not show a CAUSAL effect of sign language on spoken language skills. Only a correlation. Which means that maybe the kids who were not doing well with a CI, their parents stuck with using ASL for communication. The kids who did well with their CI, parents had no need to continue...
