    Person Below Me

I like cereal, most of the time without milk, unless it's Coco Pebbles. What goals in life does TPBM have?

"Language deprivation" is both a scientific and an educational term. It's also known as "Language dysfluency" I am concerned that as a Teacher of the Deaf, you do not know this. Unsurprisingly, these two terms are very much associated with Deaf/HoH people and Deaf education. But yeah, if you...

Did you use an interpreter to take your driver's test?

Good point but yes, this does fall under the jurisdiction of the ADA. People have actually tried to use the excuse of "but the terp could give away the answers" as a reason to deny people accomodations before. Or to deny giving Deaf people info over the phone because "the terp being involved...

Did you use an interpreter to take your driver's test?

Because by law they aren't allowed to give the answers. Just like... if a Deaf person goes to a job interview, how do you know the interpreter isn't just giving the potential employer the best answers, despite what the Deaf person says? How do you know an interpreter isn't giving the best...

How do you meet other gay deaf people?

Depends on the the anatomy of the receiving person, actually. In the sign, the pinkie is extended to represent a penis if the bottom has a penis. If the bottom doesn't have a penis, the pinkie isn't extended. =D

How do you meet other gay deaf people?

This is the funniest thing I have read all morning: I award you one internet. Any Deaf friend willing to show you the sign for straight buttsecks would also be willing to show you the sign for gay buttsecks. But yeah, an open community where you can discuss such things would make it less...

How do you meet other gay deaf people?

So you're a Hearing guy who has a thing for Deaf guys? You should try posting an ad on Craigslist! I am not saying that in a flippant way at all - I met my significant other because I was bored one day and put "Deaf" into the search section of CL personals (We're both Deaf but I am late-deaf)...

Yup, I used to work for SSD and we had a few kids with CI there who signed and had interpreters.

    Illinois school for the deaf?

I would highly suggest they move so he can attend a Deaf school. That way he can be immersed in an environment where there are other children fluent in a language he can 100% access. Just imagine if you were growing up and your parents wanted to teach you English but they had to learn it first...

I don't dispute that most do well if implanted early enough. The research seems to suggest that. However, not all of them do well, and some of them will end up language deprived due to unfounded fears and negativity about ASL.

Has anyone read this new study?

They do back up their claims with research. The problem is that the research is highly variable in outcomes. Which is why they can only make an educated guess, because that's all the research can give us at this point. It's not some kind of failure on their part at all. It has zero to do with...

Has anyone read this new study?

This wasn't a study. It's a book. I thought the point they made about children growing up language deprived was a good one. What I said about the book when I posted it is rooted in fact. You are right, I am biased. My bias is that I have experience with language-deprived Deaf adults who could...

https://www.intechopen.com/books/cochlear-implant-research-updates/the-right-to-language-ethical-considerations-ideal-situation-and-practical-measures-toward-reachi I'll just put this here. Section 3.1 is especially helpful as it speaks to the number of children implaned with CI who abandon...

Has anyone read this new study?

I don't know, and neither do you. It could be that some of the 40 kids lost to follow up were lost because they transferred to a different educational program emphasized sign. It could be that some kids would highly benefit from sign but their parents refuse to sign with them because of...

Has anyone read this new study?

Yes, many studies could fall under the umbrella of assuming causation when there is only a correlation. It's a mark of a poorly done study when that occurs. Yet poorly done studies still get published all the time. Case in point: the study under current discussion.
