Hard Of Hearing But Do Not Use Asl...

I was stating my opinion meaning on a much broader spectrum. Government offices will have statements and documents translated into many foreign languages; global conferences use earpieces for interpreters to interpret in their own languages. Everyone accepts that. On an individual scale...

If there were a cure for hearing loss would you take it

The hearing world has, from the beginning of known history, tried so hard to find a cure for deafness, to make D/dhh people hear like 'everyone else'. I had spent my whole life since I was born, trying to 'fix it', growing up thinking I was never 'good enough'. I'm a survivor from the very...

Hard Of Hearing But Do Not Use Asl...

Imo, the Hearing world adapts to foreign spoken languages by learning them and/or using an interpreter. Why not Sign language? With it being visual and not dependent on sound, you would think that it would be easy to learn and accept, after all, a good number of hearing people use their hands...

Hard Of Hearing But Do Not Use Asl...

Casey, I can relate to you a lot. Although born Severely-deaf to an all Hearing family, I only came to realise that Sign Language and the Deaf Community was something I had a right to, at the tender age of 45! Its been a slow road to learn Sign Language, as my life has become more and more...

    Question For The Deaf Community

As we all know, Deafness is invisible, (unless we are openly use Sign Language) yet ignorance is still ignorance. We will always have a problem with being treated in a way that is undesired or just downright rude due to ignorance. Yes, it gets tiresome to educate people on a day in - day out...

What Ticks You Off (Most) About Hearies?

This is a classic. When wearing hearing aids as a child I would get that question frequently.

    Your opinion on speech?

Being one of those born deaf, raised oral, I am not 100% deaf, yet I am more deaf than I am hearing. Through my life experiences of being told I had to do everything possible to fit into a hearing world and to 'become hearing' or at least appear to be, it should come as no surprise that many...

    Your opinion on speech?

Remember also, that modern video technology and media has also made positive breakthroughs and milestones for sign language as well.

    Your opinion on speech?

IMO, I agree with Grummer, ideally oralism should never be enforced. It should be a choice. However, I also feel it necessary that a dhh child should be given access to the written counterpart of a spoken language, in order to communicate with ease to non-signers. I agree with Shel90, the...

    Say what?....

You have the right to communicate with anyone in real time. If they dont like relay calls then, tell them to download a 24/7 chat program to communicate with you, or something of the like. It then concludes that the easier option for them would be to go with your preferred means of...
