A Deafie's Pet Peeve About Living Among The Hearies

I agree 100% - Same for me. I wish I had access to Sign Language when I was young. It is now my preferred language.

A Deafie's Pet Peeve About Living Among The Hearies

I get this a lot too. 'oo oh oo eh ow oo ee o eh Oo a ee ee' (this is a literal transliteration of how I hear 'you dont look deaf, how can you speak so well, you can hear me) It may well be a foreign language for what good it does for me, if it werent for 50 odd years of lip-reading and...

    Announcments at airports,shops,ports,stations

Ive travelled a lot. I watch for cues, motions, signs, noticeboards. I always arrive at boarding gate well in advance when possible. Sit in clear view of the airport boarding gate staff, if particually anxious I will notify them that i need to be told in person, but that is rarely necessary.

Please explain why deaf people are proud to be deaf???

Deaf Pride - because there is a lot more to being Deaf than 'not being able to hear'. It's Identity, Culture, Language, and History.

    Different sign languages

There is a national sign language for every country, just as there is a spoken national language for the most part. ASL is American Sign Language. There is ISL, International Sign Language used in internationally attended conferences such as World Federation of the Deaf Conferences, but this is...

    Name Signs

The custom of name-giving being taken seriously is quite common among many cultures around the world. Some countries hold sacred rituals in the naming of a baby for example. Deaf Culture, is no different. It is a real culture and should be respected and not taken lightly. If you are just...

    Sad news

Botti was the lighthouse, the solid rock through my journey to realising my Deaf Identity these past 7 years. She will be sorely missed. My thoughts and prayers are with family members at this sorrowful time.

Deaf Identity When You're Not Deaf

As we all know, 'Severe' is an audiological term for a level of hearing loss. Audiological terms are generally frowned upon within Deaf Culture due to it being labels imposed by the Hearing. I know it all too well. Even though, when at age 11, my audiologist told my mother that my hearing loss...

How Does Being Deaf Help You?

My favourite pastime is watching Korean Drama Series - guaranteed English subtitles. So frustrating when my hearing family puts on a movie and there are no captions. I compensate with watching KDS or Netflix on my phone tablet. Occasionally, I will hit the jackpot and have the same movie the...

Is There A Good Way To Respond As A Hearing Person When Someone Tells You They Are D/deaf?

    1. It reverses the tables 2. Almost immediately, the other person realises they need to accomodate YOU. 3. Either they make the effort to understand what you are signing (which is not that hard really with a bit of effort) - hearing people do it all the time when travelling and don't know the...

Is There A Good Way To Respond As A Hearing Person When Someone Tells You They Are D/deaf?

Having to explain youself everyday to each and every person, just so people can accomodate you is exhausting. With sign language there little to no explanation necessary. My post was related to the thread as well as your comment 'have you tried telling them what they could do...." FYI, 'With...

Is There A Good Way To Respond As A Hearing Person When Someone Tells You They Are D/deaf?

Have you ever tried explaining to people......"I'm deaf, i can speech-read, but you need to face me, not cover your mouth, shave off your beard and moutache, don't mumble, but don't shout either, don't sit with the light (window) at your back, don't talk behind me, dont talk with head down, or...

A Deafie's Pet Peeve About Living Among The Hearies

Others: "Why are you using Sign Language with me? I'm not deaf". Me: Oh really! Come on! "Duh"! (Because I grew up oral, I get this one all the time) I got this all the time from people who knew me when I was oral: "But you speak sooo well, no one can tell you are deaf" Absolutely...
