    Struggling to understand my deafness

Sometimes Ive had captions that were meant for a whole different episode in a series. Frustrating. Also, we are only just getting sign language for emergency broadcasts here and the camera doesnt even include the interpreter in the screen. They should have a separate screen insert like they...

    Struggling to understand my deafness

I use Signbank online and I also watch everything with closed captions on tv to keep my speech-reading skills up.

In Canada, they use ASL. Australia has Auslan (uses BSL alphabet). Each country their own.

    Why Apologize?

It's the hearing audist society's conditioning that makes us feel that we have to apologise. IMO, thats why Sign Language is so important. Apart from language acquisition, it makes deafness no longer invisible. You can establish with 1 minute how they can communicate with you. It saves...

    Excited but scared

I use internet relay when i need to 'talk' over the phone. If thats not available, i ask for a cell-phone no: I can text to, or the reception email. Being a place that provides hearing aids - they should have those accomodations.

Can HOH genuinely identify as Deaf?

Id rather sign than speak though. When I don't use speech - it is such a weight off me. Im no longer tired. Wish I had the access when I was young. I use Sign, Text, Email, Pen and paper now depending on who Im communicating with. I avoid speech as much as I possibly can. I spent more than...

Can HOH genuinely identify as Deaf?

Im one of those so-called 'oral success stories'. I can speak well enough that the average hearing person doesn't pick up that I'm deaf. Kids usually say something along the lines of 'you speak funny'. Everyday, to speak orally takes concentrated effort and is exhausting. To understand what...

Can HOH genuinely identify as Deaf?

P.s. Rather than to say that it is often that hearing group who only see it as a passing phase, which causes problems for us as to building trust.

Can HOH genuinely identify as Deaf?

Good point too, Zeefour, this is the point of this thread's discussion, to bring to light a lot of what you have just stated. I am in the same boat as you, having being born severely-deaf, the only one deaf in a hearing family and mainstreamed oral, being deprived of sign language and...

Can HOH genuinely identify as Deaf?

Thank you for sharing your life-story. It does draw attention to the struggles many of us go through when we have not grown up in the Deaf Community. It is also hard for those Deaf on the other side of the coin, who have a long history of being discriminated against, and a strong sense of...

How did you become deaf / hard of hearing?

I was born severely-deaf due to being born prematurely. Im the only one in my family who is deaf. I was raised oral and mainstreamed because I wasnt tested for hearing until I was 11. The audiologist when she discovered I could lipread quite well, assured my mother that with hearing aids I...

Can HOH genuinely identify as Deaf?

This is a general debate question. Yes, I mean, Culturally. However, in hearing culture, deafness is defined purely audiologically. (Only not as deafness but as hearinģ 'loss') So, where does it place many of us who are on this forum? What is the true definition? Only we ourselves can define...

Can HOH genuinely identify as Deaf?

This is a question which tends to circulate with mirage of differing opinions. Some swinging the pendulum as far 'They're faking' or 'using SIgn Language as your primary language is the key' and many inbetween. What's your opinion? (Be nice ;-) )

A Deafie's Pet Peeve About Living Among The Hearies

Im self-taught in Auslan (Australian Sign Language) that is because due to my medical condition, Im mostly house-bound. Im the only one who is dhh in my family. The internet has been my life-saver in regards to utilizing better modes of communication. Ive found however, that using sign...

    Controversial People

I think if there is plenty of awareness and exposure of the genuine Deaf community out there, people can distinquish the counterfeits from the genuine. It says it for itself really. Whether it be Deaf or anything else, there will always people exploiting. It doesn't condone those who exploit...
