Cochlear Implants Redefine What It Means To Be Deaf

This article came out on the NPR today. It pissed me off, but I can't place my finger on why. The best I can come up with is that it feels audist, maybe. They didn't even mention the importance of Deaf culture, either. Or that deaf schools have an important role to play in keeping that culture...

    How do you sign...

You know, out of curiosity, how WOULD you sign "high" as in "stoned"? "She went and got high."

What to do about my parents?

I'm with Grayma and Bottesini on this one. My spidey senses are tingling. But that's as far as I am going to go for now. :hmm:

    Supernatural Fans

Huge Supernatural fan here, too! I JUST finished watching seasons 1 through 6 on Netflix. I hope it doesn't take too long after season 7 finishes up for it to hit Netflix so I can watch that too.

Meniere's disease and high school... what should I do?

My mom didn't allow me to go to deaf schools for the same reason. But it was a huge mistake. My school years were horrible because of it. My grades didn't suffer because I pretty much taught myself the whole way through, but it was exceedingly difficult, and UNNECESSARY. Parents don't realize...

I'm not even sure if this is where this post belongs but....

I want to slap your mother. Sounds like she is just not comfortable with your decision to "go all the way" with your deafness. For one thing, she probably resents the extra communication difficulties and the hard work that comes with learning sign, and thinks you should just figure out how to...

    Deaf adopting

I want to adopt someday. I want to adopt deaf kids. I don't think I will ever get to though, at least not while I'm single.

My Mom & I Sing in ASL

No, that's not it, I'm only 32. HA! Oh well. I will probably think of it 2 months from now at 3 in the morning or something. I did live in Tulsa for a few months about 3 or 4 years ago. I met a few deaf people out and about while doing errands - I had a hearing service dog with me then (black...

    Weather Alert Devices

My area does have this service, but it is useless since the mobile networks pretty much get bogged down and come to a stop when something happens weather-wise. It is impossible to make a phone call if you don't have a landline, and texts take hours to go through. The last time we had a tornado...

My Mom & I Sing in ASL

My memory is awful (brain damage due to CI surgeries) so I can't be sure. It's mostly the signing style combined with her face that I swear I've met somewhere before. lol That's going to drive me bonkers now. HA!

My Mom & I Sing in ASL

Ha, that's so awesome. Your mom is adorable. She also looks really familiar, I could swear I've met her a couple of times... Has she ever spent some time in the OKC/Moore/Norman areas?

    Interpreter in OKC Needed

Good luck. If you have trouble getting one in time, send me a PM - I *might* be able to ask around and find someone willing to interpret depending on the pay (I live in Norman, OK).

    Weather Alert Devices

I have been looking around for a deaf-friendly weather radio type thing. I live in tornado alley and would like some way of knowing what is going on with my county without having to rely on TV broadcast captioning or internet. I found some useful information on the National Weather Service's...

Anybody notice the improvement with Netflix?

It's getting better, yes, but there are still plenty of things I want to watch that don't have captions yet. The fact that the movies ABOUT deafness are STILL not captioned after all this time really pisses me off. Considering that they've added captions to MANY other movies since people first...

    Switched at Birth petition

To be perfectly honest, I agree with the points made in the petition. Especially since the second season has been really bad. The first season was fantastic and the show had so much potential, but then with the second season, they focused on very minimal deaf issues and lots of overdone drama...

World of Warcraft Deaf, hoh, interpeters player recuiting

I've taken an extended break from WoW, but if there were a raiding guild actually making progress in the current raids that does NOT use voice chat, I would be seriously tempted to come back. I was a fully geared 85 resto shammy before I quit. :)

How Good Relationship Between Deaf Person and Hearing Person?

I think that hearing and deafness play a role in relationships only in the way that in relationships with issues or where one person is not up to par, differences in hearing provide more fodder for conflicts. My ex husband was hearing and my deafness was part of a lot of the conflict, but the...

    so

They are beautiful, but the problem is they are also too easy to make. People are probably seeing that and making their own. :( You need to come up with something that makes buying from you a more desirable option. Not sure what that'd be, though.
